St Thomas local groceries
We are having a family reunion over 7/4 in a rented villa & will be preparing some meals there. What are native/local items available we would want to consider when developing menus? Fruits/fish/vegetables - does St Thom do any of this; if so, where should we purchase; any Farmer's markets available?

hi, there are frest fruit stands all over the island. for the fish: apparently you can buy at stands at smiths bay not far from the red hook ferry in the early morning (like 6) or in the afternoon you can try sapphire marina where some of the fishing charters come in. sometimes this can be prearranged by phone... roadside fish stands may not be a good choice. nice fish can also be purchased at groceries. red hook marina market might be a good spot.

If you are looking for ideas as to "local" ingredients or dishes to use that you might not normally run into in the states; consider plaintains, conch, soursop, funghi, johnny cakes, callalloo, genips. There are lots more...the best thing to do is walk through the produce & meat/seafood section of Food Centre, Pueblo or Plaza Extra and see what they have when you are there. Also check out the roadside stands as was previously mentioned.

You may also want to consider hiring help for the kitchen! You'll get the most authentic meals and can't go wrong. Do take advantage of the fresh fruit markets but be prepared for high convenience food costs. ( If you can afford the weight for your luggage - you may want to bring some of your own favorite " snacks " We usually pack a soft duffle full with "kid friendly" items. The adults don't care but it has helped when there is a cranky 6 yr old who only wants PBJ and it would be the cost of a small gem to buy there.
Many resorts slow down in July and have available help that you can hire for one meal or the week. Your rental agenct may also be able to help you.
Good luck and enjoy your trip!
