St Thomas and St John in August
Planning 1st VI trip with our children ages 13,10 and 6:
1. In STT decided on Marriott Frechman's reef/ morningside for 4 nights(using points). Should we pay for upgrade to be at Morningside instead of Frenchman's? I read a previous posting about it not being up to par, and when I called the hotel, they mentioned the Morningside will close in late August for renovations.
2. For STJ we are considering Gallows Point which has received good reviews on this board, and is running a special in Aug. (7 nights for price of 5). Has anyone stayed here with children? The waterfront location, on site small beach with snorkeling and proximity to town is appealing. We also plan to rent a jeep and explore the island.Any suggestions re this or other villas would be appreciated. P.S. Are we crazy to go here this time of year?? Any other suggestions on dining, activities etc. with kids?

Also considering Gallows point in late July/ Aug and was wondering about heat and humidity at this time since most units are without AC. Anyone stayed in STJ at this time? Found a great website with review of Carribean lodging: wheretostay.com., with great reviews of Gallows, hope this helps!

gallows point not geared for children, will not take any under six and discourages all under twelve. probably will be better off at westin which is large resort with childrens activities. have stayed at gallows five times usually in mid july weather ok sometimes little warm at night in loft bedrooms but fans are provided. they are in process of air conditioning all units thats why specials are going on. will be there in july myself.

Thanks for the responses. After checking out Gallows some more vs. Westin, I still feel this will be a better fit, with more room, and kitchen facilities, not to mention the view. Has anyone out there stayed here with kids? Also, can anyone recommend Reef vs. Morningside location and recent conditions there. Thanks

If you are expecting a beach at Gallows, you will be disappointed. You will jeep or taxi to the other beaches on island. Some enjoy the snorkling there tho. Walkable distance into Cruz Bay.
Reef is high rise with elevators to the rooms. Again no beach. You shuttle or walk to the sister property at MorningStar. I thought that MorningStar had some "kitchettes" to do some lite snaks, etc. but could be wrong on that one! Might want to check out Grande Beach. You can use points there too.
Kids might like Coki Beach and Coral World Aquarium. Think there is a discount coupon on line at their site. Also in the smaller guide books that you pick up in the airport. Touristy thing to do is the tram at Paradise Point with great drinks at the top (and views too!). Atlantic Sub but both Coral World and Atlantis is not inexpensive! Heading out to Magen's Bay? Stop at Udder Delight for milkshakes! Try Cuzzin's in Town (on Back Street) for local cuisine - taxi to drop you off at the door if doing it for dinner or do lunch! Kids seem to enjoy Duffy's now on St. John. Stop at the Nat'l Park Hdquts in Cruz Bay for activities available during you stay. Do a day sail on one of the littler charter boats - they take only up to 6 pax - and explore the other islands and views!!
