Unfortunately, yep.
I work next door to Windward Island Airways (a local carrier) and checked to see if this is a normal price since it seemed high to me, as well. I have always flown charter to St. Barth's, so I'm unfamiliar with the commercial carrier prices.
I was quoted a resident fare of $170, which to me is still high considering I pay less than $100 to fly from SXM to St. Eustatius, which is even farther. I guess it's just part of the St. Barth's experience.

If you charter a flight, then it will be only for you and your travel companions. I fly with a friend who owns a plane, so I'm not really certain of the cost for a charter between SXM and St. Barth's, but my guess would be between $300 and $400, perhaps a bit more.
The cost effectiveness in comparison to a commercial flight would depend upon how many of you are splitting the charter cost. The charters usually seat approximately six people.
Your best bet will probably still be a local carrier flight (such as WinAir)direct from SXM to St. Barth's, even over the hassle and upset of the daily ferry ride over.
If it were me, I would just bite the bullet and fly a local carrier....unless I had enough people to make a charter flight worthwhile.
Good luck.
