St. Kitts/Nevis

Has anyone stayed at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel & Casino? According to info on web, it has been completely renovated. We were wondering if it is a nice place, as described, and is close to beaches and restaurants. Also, is it necessary to have a rental car to get around (both St. Kitts and Nevis)? We'd appreciate any ideas or tips which you might have for our first trip to these islands.

It is open but not yet like it used to be. Very quiet, a short hike to the Atlantic beach, (rough water)there are restaurants in the area, PJ's being the closest, 15 - 18 minute walk to the Caribbean beach, (calm water) Restaurant, Sunset Cafe' at Timothy Beach Resort, beach bars, The Dock, Mr X, Monkey Bar, Ziggy's and a few smaller ones. Depending on how long your there, a car is handy and is up to you at about $40.00US + a day, + $25.00US for drivers license. Taxi's are everywhere and can be expensive. I'm sure others will chime in with there thoughts.

Whether you rent a car or not is your own personal choice. I can tell you walking to places is not really an option on either island as you'll be severely limited on what you can see and do - things are pretty spread out.

You can take taxis but 2 r/t's a day to almost anywhere on either island will cost you about the same as a the daily cost for a rental car.

There are "local buses" (vans actually) that take people between villages but they drive the main roads only so you'd still have a long walk to reach most tourist destinations. The local buses don't run on any particular schedule (you wait at certain places on the roadside until they come by) and they don't run at night.

If you plan on staying on St. Kitts and want to visit Nevis some car rental companies have reciprocal arrangements with rental companies on Nevis so you'll have a car available to you on both islands. Lastly, there's the "new" Sea Bridge Car ferry that goes between both islands every hour during the day. A couple of the car rental companies will allow you to bring the car on the ferry. Check with your particular car rental company to see if they allow it as some don't.

Do the math and decide which works best for you. Personally, I'd budget for a rental car - it will allow you to explore the entire island and you'll be able to come and go as you please.

I did a quick hotel inspection when I was down in December. They were busy doing renovations for their soft opening around Xmas.

The rooms were clean and comfortable (friends of mine stayed there). It is a short walk from the Caribbean beach and across the street from the Atlantic beach where they will have a beach bar.

Having a car will give you more freedom (driving is on the left hand side) and taxis do add up.

If it is your first time to the island, I recommend taking a tour of the island with a guide so you can learn about the history and culture of the island. You will see many sites that you would miss if you rented a car.

Visit www.myislands.myeyez.net for more island information.

Frigate Bay, St. Kitts (January 30, 2008) – Royal St. Kitts Hotel & Casino, a family-run business formerly known as Jack Tar Village for over 20 years, is back with a new look, feel, and focus on Kittitian Culture, and it’s making this apparent on its website www.royalstkittshotel.com.

The company, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is also making an impression.

“I am extremely impressed with this attractive and compelling website,” Robert Kelly, Director of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority’s New York Office, wrote in an e-mail to Royal St. Kitts Hotel & Casino.

On Monday, January 28, Royal St. Kitts Hotel & Casino changed the name of the “News” section on its website to “Media”. The name change reflects the multimedia elements that are now featured in the “Media” section to complement the company press releases and news stories on St. Kitts-Nevis.

Now, visitors to www.royalstkittshotel.com can click on “Media” to view Royal St. Kitts promotional materials, such as its new TV commercial, as well as print photos that Garth Archibald, Royal St. Kitts Hotel & Casino’s photographer, took between October 2007 and January 2008.

The St. Kitts Tourism Authority Director in New York, Mr. Kelly added that, “A picture certainly tells a thousand words! Royal St. Kitts has never looked so good.”

New photographs were posted last week on www.royalstkittshotel.com, adding to pictures already on the website.

The pictures showcase Royal St. Kitts Hotel & Casino refurbishments, such as: a sign at the front of the hotel that features St. Kitts and Nevis’ national flower and Royal St. Kitts’ new logo, the Royal Poinciana; as well as a rich, tropical palette on the exterior and interior of the main building that – coupled with chic, understated touches to décor, such as the placement of British Colonial furniture in the lobby – adds to the charm and “island casual” feel of the lush 18-acre hotel property.

More than 60 photographs are being displayed on www.royalstkittshotel.com, many of them showing the hotel’s extensive amenities, which include the Royal St. Kitts Casino, with more than 100 slot machines and traditional and contemporary favourites like Texas hold ‘em; the Lime Beach Bar & Grill on the Atlantic beach, the Cane Club, two swimming pools, a private lake, a buffet-style restaurant, an a la carte restaurant, six bars; including two poolside snack bars, and four tennis courts.

There are also pictures on www.royalstkittshotel.com highlighting the scenic beauty and vibrant culture of St. Kitts and Nevis, for instance on the Destination Page.

In November 2007, www.royalstkittshotel.com was developed by the business development company SKNVibes.com. It is conceptualized, managed, and written in-house at Royal St. Kitts Hotel & Casino.

Royal St. Kitts Hotel & Casino has 282 charming guest rooms dispersed over more than 30 two-storey buildings; 156 refurbished rooms are ready to welcome our guests.

I was there once before and I will be going again later this month. You need a vehicle. The island is small, no sidewalks, everything is too spread out to get to on foot. Try dinner at Serendipity just outside of Basseterre. Great food - go on one of your first nights and you will probably eat there again during the week. Mr X's Shiggity Shack on the beach (Frigate Bay - Caribbean side)- great food with the freshest seafood, FUN bar, something different night (bonfire, music, etc)- just barstools and picnic tabels in the sand. Visit Brimstone Fort - listen to audio tapes. Take a tour around the island,it takes a couple of hours - you can do this on your own. Island is very low key. Shipwreck Bar on the beach - another fun place. Monkey Beach overlooking Nevis - small beach with restaurant, goats and monkeys. The town really needs sprucing up - or did last time I was there. Most relaxing island with the nicest people.

Hi there.

You must mean Turtle Beach, not Monkey Beach. The bar and restaurant that used to be there is currently closed. The owner has moved to beautiful Cockleshell Beach. The bar is now called Reggae Beach Bar.

A new upscale restaurant is schedule to open on Turtle Beach the end of March or early April.

I also recommend Serendipity for upscale dining. Food is delicious, staff very attentive and beautiful setting.

Gingerhouse is also a nice choice. Located in Frigate Bay, not far from Timothy Beach Resort.

Since you are going down later this month you should Link Up with other tourists and locals from our friendly forum at www.myislands.myeyez.net

The Shiggidy Shack is the official Link Up spot. www.mrxshiggidyshack.com

You will love St. Kitts and Nevis! We take taxis, as my brain can't drive on the "wrong" side of the road. We have stayed at the Marriott, which some say is an eye-sore, but the taxi drivers look at it as income. We like it there and the casino is a plus. In Nevis, we go to the opposite and stay at Oualie Beach Hotel....very plain, but the staff is great!
Taxi drivers: St. Kitts: Leroy and Wilma Proscope....Nevis: Chip or Tin Tin
Restaurant recommendations:
St. Kitts: Serendipity, Fishermans Wharf, Marshalls, P.J.'s, Mr. X's Shiggidy Shack, Reggae Beach Bar
Nevis: Bananas, Coconut Grove, Oualie Beach Hotel

These 2 islands are my favorite, so far.
