Anyone have any ideas about how to get good airfares to St John ? We are going April 1st and the fares are still high, about $550 from Columbus OH. Should we wait until the date gets closer ? Any advice appreciated. First trip to St John, sounds like a wonderul place !

Pag,
That rate sounds about right. We paid $451 a ticket and flew from RDU (Raleigh NC).

Maybe keep a check on it for a few weeks...but I do not think that you will get much better than that.

I need ideas for Christmas day! We need a nice restaurant for christmas dinner for 6 people! Is Caneel a good choice or someplace else?

We found the food at Caneel to be very so-so. There are so many good restaurants on St. John - I'd really suggest something else for a special dinner. There are great recommendations on this list - Chateau Bordeux has great views. Stone Terrace, La Tapa, Ten Tables are all great.

My husband and I just spent 5 days in St. John for the 1st time. We ate dinner at:

The Fishtrap -- good food, but not great.
The Balcony -- we really enjoyed our dinner here!
Caneel Bay Grand Buffet (we stayed at Caneel Bay) -- just okay.
Margarita Phil's -- I had shrimp enchiladas, which were very good.
The Lime Inn -- we liked it a lot -- I had the "all you can eat peel & eat shrimp". Very tasty & a good deal.

Overall, food was fine. (I think I'm just jaded since I live in NYC.)

The Balcony was probably the best dinner that we had.

Hi Valerie, thanks for feedback (double- meaning intended) on your dining experiences! Any other interesting stuff to report , eg hotel, beaches you liked, etc , that you can put on a brief trip report for eager St J future-trippers?
Ummm....food in NYC!! No wonder you're jaded!!

slBuz: You might consider Asolare as a spot for a Christmas dinner. The food there is pretty good to excellent and the ambiance overlooking Cruz Bay and St. Thomas is absolutely gorgeous. From other posts, Caneel's food is nothing interesting.

Valerie, re: my post above--sorry. Didn't realize the Caneel Bay report was written by you 'til justnow. Just proves trip reports come in all kinds of ways! Thank you for sharing your information.

We're back and ate Christmas dinner at La Tapa!!! WOW!! It was delicious...by far the best meal we had! The Lime Inn was good but way over-priced for what you got! Loved Margharita Phils too. If you like Asian...the China Shack was surprisingly yummy.

Stone Terrace was ok, I think we would've enjoyed it better if we had been able to get an outside table to have water views. We ate at Morgan's Mango once 3 years ago, and always eat there now. If you go early enough to catch daytime views and sunset too, it's a beautiful view from there.

Miss Lucy's--we did a birthday breakfast there, and the food was alright, although not exceptional [breakfast], but they were not very friendly at all.
