St. Croix question about activities
My soon-to-be husband and I are traveling to St. Croix on our honeymoon. We will be there end of Aug. thur beginning of Sept. staying at the Carambola Beach Resort. I have done extensive research through the internet and have greatly enjoyed the forums here on Fodor's, especially the restaurant updates. They give me wonderful ideas of where to go. I have yet to read much about other activities besides the Buck Island trip (which is included in our honeymoon package at the hotel). I would like information on the horseback riding facilities, I know of two so far, and which is recommended. I am also interested in deep sea fishing and would like suggestions on who has the best rates. I have been to all the websites that feature St. Croix activities, e.i. stcroixthisweek.com and gotostcroix.com (two of my favorites). I am mostly interested in some first hand encounters and experiences. Thanks!

I think you will love St. Croix. My mom and I visited at the end of April, as my parents are considering retiring there and were on the hunt for condos. We had such a wonderful time and my mom cannot wait until they move there. As she says, "I think I left part of my heart on that island."
While we didn't do any deep sea fishing or horse back riding while we were there, I would highly recommend a trip to Point Udall, the eastern most point in the United States. While all that's really there is a small monument and marker, the views are spectacular, especially if you can make it there for a sunrise. I'd also recommend a trip to the Botanical Gardens and Whim plantation near the western end of the island. The tour of the Cruzan rum factory is also fun, and you have the opportunity to bring some really good and inexpensive rum back home with you. (I've seen it on the shelves of my local liquor stores for double the price). If you are renting a car or have access to a 4X4 you might want to make a drive through the rain forest as well. We visited the LEAP in the rain forest, where local artisans craft furniture and other products out of the fallen mahogany trees. We enjoyed the Shoys beach near the Buccaneer for its seclusion and the beaches in Fredericksted for the amazing blues and greens of the water.
As for dining options, we had great meals at Duggan's (bring bug spray) and Tutto Benne. There is also a Tuesday night buffet at the Hotel on the Cay complete with stilk walkers, brass pan players and other Caribbean-type entertainment. While the food wasn't that spectacular, you get to dine right on the beach, take in the entertainment and enjoy the views of the Christiansted Harbor at night. We saved the best for last though and had dinner our last night at Kendrick's, eating outside in their courtyard.
Congratulations on your wedding and have a wonderful time in St. Croix!

We tried Paul and Jill's equestrian stables this past February (with our kids) and had a great time. They take you into the rain forest and a short trip on the beach. Jill will get your horses trotting so if you're not up for a bit of adventure (not too much) don't go there. We had lunch (but dinner would be fun too) at Changes In Latitude and liked it very much.
If you have the $$$, definitely do dinner at Kendricks. It's nothing like anything you'd find back home--outdoor courtyard, great food, definitely St. Croix. We also love Duggans (have never had a problem with bugs) and Rumrunners (you MUST have a painkiller as long as you're not driving). We're not big fans of Tutto Bene but others like it a lot. We tried Cafe Bleu this year and were very impressed--although service was a bit slow.
Have a great honeymoon!!! We love St. Croix.

Congratulations! You will love the Carambola. We've stayed there twice; it's secluded and the beach is very nice. The swimming area is small due to sea urchins, but it big enough for the number of people at the resort. I hope you'll have a rental car - we just enjoyed driving the entire length of the island. I'm glad you're doing Buck Island. The menu at the Carambola was small, but the food was good; especially the Friday Night Pirate's Buffet, which draws a lot of local people. They have entertainment that night. We also enjoyed the Carambola Golf Course for breakfast and lunch. They're not open for dinner. The food is great and reasonably priced. You sit on an open-air terrace which overlooks the golf course. When you get to the gate, just tell them you're going for lunch and they'll let you in. We also like eating at the Ft. Christian Brew Pub in Christiansted. It sits right on the water where you can watch the sea planes take off and land right on the water. Kendrick's is nice but make sure you have a reservation. I felt we weren't treated very well because we showed up without one. I can't give you any advice on fishing as we've never done that. Enjoy your honeymoon!

I stayed at Carambola for about 10 nights it is very nice. Did you get one of the cottages / rooms on the beach? It was wonderful...We went on the Buck Island deal. It was funny because our captain had a whole jar of wedding rings from all the honeymooners who had lost their rings snorkeling out there. Besides that we did not do a lot of activities. A hurricane had just hit the island and it took us a couple of days to get there from San Juan.
The beach at the hotel is very nice. We went into Christiansted a few times to shop, etc.
Make sure you go to Sonyas in town and get a hook bracelet. I a gold one during a different trip that I have not taken off in many years.
There are some good restaurants in town. The menu at Carambola was pretty good. I just remember I feel like all I did was eat because the hotel did turn down service with freshly baked cookies and clearly canadian...
I am sure you will enjoy it. The golf course is good if you golf.
I would highly recommend going to the Bucaneer Hotel and having a meal there too. Have fun!
