Safety

People have told me Jamaica is somewhat unsafe. But can't you say that about anywhere and everywhere? I would like to go to Negril with three friends in March. We are women in our late 20s.

What do you guys think?

I think you should use the search tool on this forum and search under the word "jamaica". There are a (LOT) of posts that go into this in great length.

You need to read between the lines for sure. Although I have never been there, I wouldn't be afraid to go. If it was so dangerous, it wouldn't be so popular. Just like anywhere, you need to use common sense. I'd bet the house that many US cities are far worse crime wise than the area of Negril.

Again, use the serach tool on this site, and you'll get your answer 7 then some.

Jamaica is bliss! Lots of natural beauty and gorgeous sunrises. I would suggest that you stay close to your hotel at night, but you and your friends will enjoy. Go and have fun!

Took my wife there 2 years ago. Stayed at the Tryall club in Mo bay. Had a great time and did not feel unsafe at all. Went into downtown montego bay for dinner on a busy night. Besides people approaching you there were no worries. Have a great time and use your head just like any other city.

This safety issue in Jamaica is getting old on this board. Again we have been to Jamaica many times and "NEVER" had a problem with anyone. That's not to say some of the people on this board have had a few problems, but all you need is a little common sense. I live just outside of Chicago and would not walk in some neighborhoods at night, so just be aware of your surrondings and go
out in pairs... have fun where ever you decide.

Yep I agree with Kimberly, this topic is getting old. Basically, Jamaica has a high crime rate...less so in the tourist areas although violent crime is not unheard of. It irritates me when people say "oh there's no crime cause I've never had a problem"...thats ignorant and not helpful. Further you will find these people who tote Jamaica as very defensive about that destination, I don't see why....I've been all over the world and so many places I feel no need to protect any of them from the real truth. Go and enjoy, just use common sense or more so in Jamaica, it truly is a beautiful place with great people and execellent food!
