Runaway Bay alone

Hello:
I am a 33 yr old SF and I am want to go on an all-inclusive Carribean vacation in January. It looks like I may be going alone (no one I know can go) I did Club Med already, but I am DYING to go to Jamaica. Breezes Runaway Bay looks great. I am not looking for a big pick-me-up place, but I would hate it if it were all couples and I was the odd-single-girl-out

Has anyone go to this resort alone? If so, how was it? Would you go alone again, recommend it?
Thanks,

r.

Everybody on this board must be blissfully in love. It seems "solo" questions don't generate a lot of responses. Anyway, I have not been to the resort you are referring to, but if you haven't aleady, I read the reviews on the hotel section of Fodors. A woman just posted on 4-30-03 that she went with single friends there and thought the resort was great. However, she said it was mostly couples, and would only recommend it to couples. As a very experienced solo traveler, I find it difficult to take a warm weather vacation anywhere that isn't mostly couples. I think that's why I always end up in a European city!

Would suggest Treasure Beach area rather than Runaway Bay resort as a better choice for a single female traveller up for Jamaica. See www.treasurebeach.net, the area Web site, for a wide range of accomodations. Jake's would put you in center of things without the single gal sense of isolation.

Tiv:
What is Teasure Beach? it is an all inclusive. Their website seems disorganized, and it doesn't look that way, and that's kind of what I am going for. I do not want to rough it.

Treasure Beach is an area, not a resort, and there are several small hotels there. It is off the beaten track compared to Negril, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, etc.

I would choose Negril over Runaway Bay just because the beach is much better.

RLYW,
Your previous question is a little confusing.

TIV, I think she's primarily interested in an all inclusives.

Rlyw, "Treasure Beach" is an area in Jamaica, similar to the way Runaway Bay is. Treasure beach is comprised of various resorts. The area is very laid back, even more so than Negril. I think what TIV is trying to convey is that Treasure Beach is good for the single traveler since the resorts there don't harp on the "Couples" theme. TB is an area where people who truly want to undwind should seek. You won't get the the hustle-bustle of the typical resort area.

To be honest, Rlyw, most all inclusives primarily attract couples even if the claim not to. Either you find couples only or couples with children. This is one of the reasons many single travelers opt for the smaller-scaled resorts.

If TB is too quiet for you you may look into Negril as well which has some great small-scaled resorts.

The problem with being a single female in Negril is that she'll get hit on a lot...this would not be the case in Treasure Beach.

Jake's is not roughing it but it is more funky-artsy than it is the typical AC-TV hotel room. It's part of the Island Outpost chain owned by Chris Blackwell (of Island Records who "discovered" Bob Marley and U2 among others). Very unique property that gets great travel mag write-ups (?Officially the coolest place to stay in the world.?
London Evening Standard

?A laid back oasis of seclusion.?
Wallpaper

?Chicest shack in the Caribbean.?
Vogue).

The cottages are all uniquely designed by Sally Henzel in an almost Moorish theme - each cottage is different and there are only 15 so it may well be booked up.

If I were staying in TB solo I'd probably pick Jake's too, because it's sort of the social center of the area and so many interesting people (many not part of a couple) stay and hang out there...Europenas, Americans, movie stars, writers....

It's not all-inclusive but does have a bar and 2 restaurants on the property so if you want to stay only there you can....

They do have a web site: http://www.islandoutpost.com/Jakes/

It's a good pick for a single...but if the original poster enjoyed Club Med, it amy not suit...it's nothing like that.

Hi there:

Yes I DO want a place that's a bit more luxurious, and from what people are saying & their site, the Treasure Beach places are not that!! I want air conditioning, organized boat/snorkel trips, good food that's included, and a SAFE environment.

But, again, if there's anyone went to Breezes Runaway Bay & is NOT part of a couple/family, please let me know how it was.

rlywreezes would fit you well as a single; tho it's not luxe, it will be non-challenging, comfortable AND all-inclusive, safe, etc. Just remember it's a resort, not Jamaica.

Hi there. I stayed at Grand Lido Braco in August with a girlfriend. We had a wonderful time. I noticed a mix of couples and singles...mostly couples, but everyone was friendly and we never felt out of place. Breezes Runaway Bay is about 15 minutes from Grand Lido Braco. It is moderate/comfortable, not deluxe. Grand Lido Braco is more upscale and offers more restaurant options. Good luck with your trip.
