Now my next question would be Puerto Rico or St. Thomas for beautiful beaches? And where in St. Thomas would one stay that is on the beach and under $250? Any advice is helpful.

Shopping and beaches are the main attractions in St. Thomas. Most of the St. Thomas beaches are crowded and Magens Bay is the most famous destination for beaches. There are many other beaches but still if you want to go to little peaceful beach then I would suggest to go to Sapphire Beach. It's not that crowded as Megans bay. For snorkeling, Coki is the best bet.
