Pros & Cons of St. John

Hi Susan!
~A "Pro" for ya~ My husband I loved St. John! We have been on several cruises (that my husband wins with his work) and the ship ports at St. Thomas. We snagged a ferry on the other side of St. Thomas. We escaped from the crowds of people shopping at St. Thomas to St. John for the day. We rented a jeep and took off for a beach. We stopped off at Cinnamon beach and sunbathed and snorkeled. We drove around and came upon a great place on the side of the road for lunch. We had the best lobster salad sandwich we have ever had! We had a ball! Such a layed back island! We are talking of a trip there and possibly staying at a villa soon.
I think you would like it if you are into relaxing and tropical beauty. I've heard there isn't much nightlife there.
Have fun!
Sarah

Hi Susan,
I just got back a week ago from my 2nd trip to St John. When you say pros and cons it really is difficult because everyone is looking for something different.
St John is visually gorgeous, stunning beaches, clear water and excellent snorkeling. There are two smallish resorts on the island, the Westin and Caneel and there are dozens of condos and villas that can be rented. Most are hillside and have amazing views.
The island is very small with one town (Cruz Bay) on the western end and a few restaurants and shops (Coral Bay) on the east end. There are several very good restaurants and several bars. The dining is good, not world class but very good. There is very limited nightlife. No clubs, no casinos, etc. That's a pro for me.
If you want to relax, swim, snorkel, hike and socialize St John is perfect.
If you're looking for AI's, dancing, discos, gambling, lots of shopping and fancy hotels, St John will disappoint. It's very subjective and really depends on what you want.

Just still trying to find the perfect vacation. I think I posted it for St. Thomas, St. John & Grand Cayman. We want something similar to Aruba (love the beaches that you can walk with such a close proximity to all the resorts). We like suclusion, but don't want to be forced with no night life.
We want to go to Grand Cayman, but I think we'll wait until the Residences Inn by Ritz is open next year.

Susan, I think it is a good idea to wait for the Ritz as it, no doubt, will be THE place to stay on the island. However, let me correct you about something. The regular hotel will be a Ritz-Carlton while the "Residences" (NOT Residences Inn) will be a separate for-sale condominium building right next to the hotel/resort!
