Police Corruption vs. Islands Stability (Wedding?)
Help deciding? Wedding and Kids?
Can anyone help out this new traveling family? We have a wedding (in pr) to go to and do NOT want to stay in vieques island. We cancelled our b&b reservation just in time. there are ( too many accounts of us folks in a bad way and police and fbi news headlines etc.. in pr. too) So, our question- can we fly out of puerto rico to belize or charter a boat? We are a party of 8. Anyone have a charter or reccommend one please? We are leaving on the 22nd.
Thank you for any suugestions!!!

I'm pretty sure you can't fly non-stop or direct from anywhere in Puerto Rico to Belize. You'll first have to make your way to Miami where you can get a connecting flight to Belize City.
I do know American Airlines has connecting flights from San Juan to Belize City (via Miami). Check their website for fares and seat availability for the dates you want to travel.
There might be other airlines you can use out of Puerto Rico but they will probably entail at least 2 stops.
Chartering a boat would be VERY EXPENSIVE - it's almost 1500 miles of open water so you'd need a very large boat and would take almost a week to make the trip. Chartering a private plane would be evenMORE EXPENSIVE than a boat charter. Your only real option is to fly commercially.
Not sure I understand your reasoning for not wanting to have your wedding in Puerto rico as there are any number of "safe" places around the island.

hi drjohn, first of all vieques is a small, beautiful island & hardly a hotbed of crime & corruption. (type in vieques in the search box above to read trip reports from ppl who have been recently).
if you are attending a wedding on vieques you're probably going to need to spend one night there. the last plane back to sju leaves at 7:40pm so you'd have to be in the airport by 6-6:30.
you can fly sju to belize but it will take 17-21 hrs as you must go through miami or atlanta. you can, however, fly from sju to numerous other islands including st. thomas (giving you access to st. thomas, st. john and all the bvi's), st. croix, antigua/barbuda, st. martin, martinique, st. lucia (slu only), barbados & grenada - all non-stop flights usually on american or liat.
fajardo is the small town on pr nearest to vieques. i have never chartered a boat anywhere but here's a list of charter companies working from fajardo (there are ferries from vieques to fajardo) : http://directory.puertorico.com/l/ea...boat-charters/
if you're going with young children i'd think hard about chartering - if they are unhappy/bored you will all be unhappy.

Virginia gave great advice.
I'm confused though--is it your wedding or are you invited to a wedding there and don't want to stay longer than you have too? If it's your wedding, why would you pick a place you don't want to stay? or do you want to "honeymoon" somewhere else?
Also confused about your post in the first place--while there may or may not be police corruption/island stability on any give island or country (may include Belize) it never really affects tourists and wouldn't consider that a reason to go/not go to a Caribbean island.
To further help us, can you tell us more?
