If you are a US citizen, you will need proof of citizenship, i.e. a birth certificate, if you're going to St. John from St. Thomas (both part of the US).
Entry requirements for non-US citizens are the same as entering the United States.
So you'll be fine with birth certificates and a picture ID. But it's always a good idea to get a passport. Makes life easier.

St. John is part of the US Virgin Islands so no passport is needed now, nor will it under the new regulations.
See http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2225.html
But, if you want to go over to the British Virgin Islands, i.e. out of the US, you will need a passport.

Whoops, forgot that - and I really have no excuse, I'm researching a trip to St John! With my passport

I'm hoping to do some island hopping and spend a week in St Johns and then a week in Tortola.
Too many islands, too little time!
