Nisbet Beach

Can anyone tell me how the beach is at Nisbet? (Since this is the only hotel on the beach except for the Four Season which is quite expensive). Is it deep--that is, is the walk on the sand to the water long? Is it very breezy? We are looking to go there in March and like a deep beach with some shade. Is it breezy since it is on the Atlantic side--ie can you sit there or is sand blowing?

The Nisbet beach is lovely. Deep is a relative term but it is a good sized beach. Nisbet does not share its beach with the Four Seasons. The Four Seasons is on a completely different beach.

It's a beautiful beach with lots of shade--both in the form of palm trees and beach umbrellas that the hotel provides. It's not particularly deep, but it is a light sand color, lighter than the other beaches we saw on the island. The beach bar at Nisbet provides many tasty snack and drink options and I found the service to be quite warm and charming. We found the breeze to be ample and steady without being a nuisance. And the view from the water of Mt. Nevis is lovely. The waves were on the rough side there when I visited in November 2004. Not too rough to enjoy cooling off in the water and floating around, but a little rough for swimming.

Oualie Beach Hotel is also on a beach, and it is less expensive than Nisbet. If money is an issue, you may want to check into that option.

Laby and ejcrowe are correct in their assessments. I just got back from Nevis (see my trip report, esp. since we stayed at Oualie.). The walk on the sand to the water is short (10-20' or so), the breezes were pretty gentle (no blowing sand) and there is some shade. Pinney's Beach is deep (larger distance of a walk from start of sand to water), but there's not much shade. If you rent a car, you can easily beach-hop.

Not that the Oualie is not nice, but in my opinion, the beach at Nisbet is nicer for several reasons:

1. More Shade: Nisbet has hammocks and sun chairs placed under palms and man- made straw umbrellas, providing lots of shade. The sand is finer and there are less sea urchins. (But wear shoes if you are going to walk on the bottom anywhere in Nevis water where there are rocks.)

2. More breeze: On a windy day, the sand will be more likely to fly at Nisbet than at Oualie, but there's some shelter thanks to the structures around the beach side pool. However, to me a breeze is a nice thing though, because it keeps you comfortable when the temperature soars.

3. Better snorkeling: The underwater remnants of an old pier makes Nisbet a much nicer spot to snorkel, and the water is clearer.

As for depth and width: None of them are wide or deep, if by deep you mean a steep drop as you step into the water, but I would guess Nisbet is the more shallow of the two (but on the other hand, it is not as shallow as some of the coral islands like Anguilla and Barbuda either). None of them are exactly wide either (not even close to the wideness of for example the volley ball net adorned California beaches, where even the thickest part of your sole will be burned off by the time you reach the numbing, ice cold anaesthesia of the Pacific). At Nisbet you can drag your sun chair to the far end of the beach and be maybe 25 meters from the water, if you chose to. A little less at Oualie. But you can't go wrong choosing either one--Nevis is paradise on earth.

Hope not to be too annoying, but...I keep reading all of these questions and reports on Nevis and St. Kitts. We were there last summer and simply adored both islands. I had posted earlier under the title "Have been to other islands, but.." It seems like people return to these two islands over others. Again, am I being too narrow-minded when trying to decide on a destination? The only thing we dislike in an island is over-crowding and too Americanized. I like culture and stuff to do, as the sun ain't my best friend We do travel in late June/early August, but it is no hotter in the islands than it is here on the east coast. Thanks for your consideration.

iw, I'm not sure I understand your post very well. You've already been to St. Kitts & Nevis and loved them, but you're looking for someplace new? Or are you looking for someone to tell you just to go back there since you enjoyed it so much the first time?

Not sure what you mean by being too narrow minded. Seems to me that you can choose your vacation based on whatever criteria you like--it's your time, your money, your preferences, no?

I agree that my post is confusing. Maybe I am looking for someone to tell me to stop searching for other places and go back to what I love. I hate making decisions! I guess I feel that if I return to the same places, I will be missing out on something else. Oh well, I will keep researching and get back with any further questions. We stayed at Oualie the first time and I will check out Nisbet for something different.

We are fortunate that we can do more than one trip per year. So, every year we 'make' ourselves to some place new. Otherwise, we would just keep going back to Belize. Last year it was Panama, this year it was St. Kitts/Nevis. If I could only do one trip, we would go to Belize every year.

Nisbet beach is nice and fairly "deep" however there is a fair bit of coral in the water. The beach can also be quite windy. Nisbet's beach bar is great and so is there pool if the water is too rough or the beach too windy. I ahve stayed at three different villas about 100 yards fom Nevis in Blue Crescent Estates. I know Nisbet like my own back garden. Oualie is my favorite, while not very "deep" it is verl warm. calm, and sheltered. Drinks are much cheaper too.

Remember that there are NO, I repeat, NO private beaches on Nevis, it is the LAW. Even hotels have to let you on the beach.

See this page for more info on Nevis' beaches.

iw-
I remember your post from prior to my trip to Nevis last month. I now understand what the attraction is. I would love to go back to Nevis again and again, but as Jean said, sometimes the best thing is to "make" yourself try a new place. We never thought we'd ever find anywhere that we liked as well as Kauai. We've been to a number of Caribbean islands and none have come close - until now. We like Nevis just as well. But if you don't try something else once in awhile, you'll never know. If you really have your heart set on Nevis/St Kitts, then go, but don't feel guilty for it!
