Nevis v. St. Lucia for honeymoon

My fiancé and I are very excited to spend 5 days getting married in St. Kitts in June. The details of the wedding are already confirmed but now we are having trouble deciding where to honeymoon. We are primarily considering hopping across the narrows to Nevis, or flying down to St. Lucia for our 8 day dream vacation.

We are pretty active and want to take advantage of snorkeling, diving, hiking in the rain forest, zip lining and other activities that don't include lying around on the beach (though we want to see beautiful beaches and blue water, too). We would like a relatively nice resort, but are not that interested in all-inclusives.

Has anyone been to both islands and is willing to guide two excited, but undecided, newlyweds? After spending 5 days on St. Kitts will we be bored spending 8 more on Nevis? Any thoughts on which island (and/or resort) might fit our desires for an active and romantic honeymoon? Many thanks!

You probably know this already but there's no zip lining on Nevis (there is one on St. Kitts) and neither of those islands are noted for their snorkeling. Decent "off beach" snorkeling on either island is very limited and the "best" snorkeling is accessible only by boat (same spot from either island) and it is only average. Diving around the two is OK but here again you'll be going to the same spots.

St. Lucia is a much larger island (238 sq. miles) than either St. Kitts (63 Sq. mi.) or Nevis (36 sq. mi.) so by definition there's more to see and do. Like the other islands St. Lucia is not noted for "off beach" snorkeling but you'll probably find "boat access" snorkeling and diving to be better around St. Lucia but it is far from the best you'll find elsewhere in the Caribbean. You will have difficulty getting to St. Lucia from St. Kitts as it is quite a distance (about 250 miles) and there are not non-stop or direct flights between those islands. Depending on the days you travel you'll have to fly to either San Juan, St. Martin or Antigua to catch a connecting flight to St. Lucia. Schedules may be such that it could take you the better part of a day or you may even have to overnight "enroute" - island hopping in the Caribbean is not always easy (or inexpensive).

FYI - beaches on St. Lucia, while very picturesque have dark sand (dark grey to almost black). the only light sand beach is a small one that was man-made for one of the resorts on the island. Both Nevis and St. kitts have darker sand beaches though not as dark as on St. Lucia.

On Nevis, Nisbet Plantation Resort (as recommended qwovadis) is very nice, especially for honeymooners. Another place that might interest you is Montpelier Inn - go here if you want to stay up on the mountain and in a small intimate setting. If you want a full service luxury Resort check out the Four Seasons.

On St. Lucia look at Jalousie Plantation, Jade Mountain, Laderra or Anse Chastinet.

Hope this helps.

Definitely St. Lucia for your honeymoon -- you can't beat the hotels for sheer beauty and romance. I would highly recommend doing the Cap Maison/Ladera package so you will get to see more of the island. If you don't want to do that, then defintely consider staying at one of the resorts near Soufriere (Ladera, Tides, Anse Chastenet or Jade Mountain). The setting screams romance and you can do all sorts of great hikes, day sails, excursions. You won't regret it!!

If you are into understated elegance and very good dining and nice beaches with less social life Nisbet Plantation on Nevis Plantation cannot be beat, IMO. There will be fewer children but if you have not developed a healthy conversational relationship or do not enjoy relaxing and reading some of the days it might not be to your liking after 5 days. But there is some hiking and of course water sports but snorkeling is not one of them.Even the diving is not very good.
