I am looking to book a trip to Nevis the last week of august (23-29). I am being told by few that is the start of hurricane season..

Anyone know if this is a bad time to go? Am i taking a huge risk??

Actually the official Atlantic/Caribbean hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30 with the most active period for storms being September 1 through October 15. The further removed from those dates, the less chances there are of seeing a storm. There's no way to predict now if a storm will be brewing in the Atlantic during the last week in August let alone whether or not it will track anywhere near Nevis. Right now your guess is as good as anyone. That said, if no storms are in the area, the overall weather should be fine. You might want to purchase trip insurance in the event you have to cancell. If you do, make sure your policy covers hurricanes - read the fine print because to make sure you understand the coverage being offered. There are many different types of travel insurance.

It's a risk always so my opinion is book it and cross your fingers. Nevis Four Seasons is fantastic.

I was at Nevis FS over Labor Day in 1997 when a hurricane came through.

Although we did not get a direct hit, the water was very rough, we could not dive, it rained quite a bit, and we could not take the launch back to SKB.

We had to take a small plane over, and it was a trip I will NEVER forget! amp;

That is actually the very last week before many resorts close for the season, although I am not sure about the 4S (I do not know if they close Sept/Oct).

I have to agree with Diana. It is a lot of money to spend at a very risky time of year. Even if a huricane is not in the area, it is rainy season...the water may be churned up and rough, you may get a tropical storm, or just crappy weather. I would travel further south that time of year...after all when in the caribbean, weather is everything!

You may get people posting that they have been to the caribbean during that time of year and never had a problem - they are lucky. For the vacationers who have been stuck in the caribbean with rain for a good part of their trip will tell you otherwise. There is nothing worse than looking forward to a vacation/honeymoon and to have bad weather. Complete waste of time and money.

Generally the southern caribbean islands are better for this time of year Barbados, Aruba and I think even St. Vincent & the Grenadines. Palm Island looks very nice....I have not been but have been looking into it. Its an all inclusive private island which I read has recently been purchased by elite island resorts. Do a search here , I have read some good reviews about it if you are interested.

I have not been to any of the islands mentioned, but I do know that they are not in the "hurricane belt"...so when the weather is terrible in the northern caribbean islands...it is beatiful in the southern. I have read that Aruba is very americanized but the weather is always great (very dry).
