The first choice in Negril is whether you stay "on the beach" or up "on the Cliffs"? I definitely would recommend Tensing Pen as mentioned above. It's rustic but luxurious at the same time. Catcha Falling Star is similar and nearby. Moon Dance Villas a very nice high end resort out the west end road.

my favorite boutique hotel in negril on the beach is idle awhile. it has only 14 rooms and many people book a year ahead as it's a really nice place and usually full. you may get lucky depending on when you want to go. last year we had to adjust our vacation a little to stay there. we could only get a room for 5 days so we stayed at tensing pen for the last 4 days. its really not a big deal jumping in a taxi and moving from one place to another in negril. look at negrilonestop.com for a good map and details of the places both on the beach and cliffs.
this year we stayed at the seastar(really cool place),the rockhouse(ok but we liked tensing pen better) and the riu(really didn't like this place at all, guess we're not a/i people). there are so many great places in negril and we like to try different place when we go back. good luck!!!
