Need Hotel Advice for St. Martin - URGENT!

I'm travelling to St. Martin in late January 2009. I haven't been since I was a teen (am now 37) so I don't really remember anything. There is a chance that I will be travelling alone. I want to stay around Orient Bay, but want a beachfront property with an amazing beach. The room/property doesn't have to be spectacular, but the grounds should be nice and safe, and the room has to be clean with a decent shower and bed. I really just want a large, beautiful beach, with some variety of restaurants within walking distance (if possible) Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!!

Club Orient is right on the beach (haha). Seriously, there are few true beachfront resorts in that particular area. Esmerelda is the only one that comes to mind ... someone ... there must be another true beachfront resort on Baie Orientale ... right?

But almost all have little restaurants and chairs even if they are up the hill. Few have "grounds".

If you want a nice self-contained resort, then try the Westin (beautiful beach there) or the new Radisson (isolated but a fairly nice beach, and it's opening in a few days).

But I sense you're looking for something cheap. The joy of St. Maarten is driving around and experiencing the different beaches and restauratns. You might be happier in Grand Case (Grand Case Beach Club is a good choice there).

I cannot think of any other on the beach hotel at Orient other than Club O.
maybe you could ask your question at the SXM forum of traveltalkonline. That is frequented by many orient visitors.

If you already have a ticket to St. Maarten, you might also consider taking a short ferry ride over to Anguilla, where there are a few small inns and resorts that would be reasonably priced and on beautiful beaches.

You could check out Alamanda Hotel, it's beach front on the other end of Orient Beach.

St. Martin is in "clusters". You can stay at any and walk around to the different restaurants, but you might want a car to access the different areas. The restaurants around Orient Bay are more the beach bar variety.

I have stayed at Grand Case Hotel, it's decent, and has a small beach. It's walking distance to the best restaurants on the island.

I have also stayed at Sonesta Maho Bay Beach Resort. The beach there is fun watching the planes land, and you can hang out at Bamboo Bernies which is pretty fun. There use to be Sunset Bar on the beach with live bands, but I think it sustained major damage recently with Hurricane Omar. That cluster has numerous restaurants and shops, and some casinos you can walk too.

I have stay at other hotels, the names escape me, they were in the French side.

As Doug said, you might want a car to explore, it really is what makes St. Martin fun. Plus, with dual personalities, exploring is even better.

Plus by having a car, you can ferry over to Anguilla, which has the amazing beaches you crave.

Esmerealda and Alamanda are on the beach and quite nice. When we were there in July, the beach bar at Esmeralda didn't serve dinner, but they have a restarant on site that did...Astrolabe, I believe. Very good, but $$. You definitely want to check out Grand Case. I wouldn't walk the beach at night alone.

A few other possibilities on Orient are L'Hoste, and La Plantation. Do a Google search.

Keep in mind, there are very few restaurants in this specific area.

Located in Grand Case, (just a few minutes from Orient) is the Grand Case Beach Club. It's nice, secluded, and on a quiet beach, close to several gourmet restaurants and Lolo's..(outdoor BBQ's).

Another very nice spot in Grand Case, on the hill, is L'Esplanade.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my inquiry on this subject. I have decided to stay at the Esmeralda Resort. I really wanted to stay on the French side, and there are many places to eat around this area. I do have a friend travelling with me, so now I can be a little more adventurous. I may go over to Anguilla. Thanks again to everyone. I really appreciate it!
