Need Help

My wife and I want to go to the Carribean, it is our first time. I don't know where to go. We want to go to an island where it is romantic, of course, and one that has a night-life too!! We want to stay in a nice hotel like the Ritz, willing to spend up to $400/night, but don't want a place like Kauai where there is no nightlife, even though we loved Kauai!! Please help. Much appreciated!!

Night-life in the Carribean is pretty limited. The islands that I have been to that have the best are Aruba and St. Martin.

Is it ok to go to Aruba or St Martin beginning of August and if so, any recommendations on 4 or 5 star hotels there.

Hurricanes are something you don't need to worry about in Aruba. You will find nightlife there, such as the Banana Bus that will take you to different bars, etc. but no nice hotels like the Ritz. Hotels are more modest than those in Kauai.

August should be fine for Aruba...it is normally out of the hurricane belt.

We liked the Renaissance in Oranjestad..it is a four star hotel. The staff is very friendly. It is a good central location to activities and sites. Also is located in a shopping mall,it has a 24 hr casino, movie theatre, vegas style shows,an excellent spy and a private island that is only a 5-10 minute boat ride..the boat comes into the center of the hotel to take you there. We really enjoyed the island.

Honestly, the best nightlife in the Caribben is on Puerto Rico, with a vibrant party atmosphere. On Puerto Rico, the Isla Verde, Condado area is the best, this is the Miami Beach of the Caribbean. This area if full of night life, chique stores, and restaurants and great hotels. (they are building a renassaince) The hotels in this are, the best, are Condado Plaza Hotel, Ritz Carlton, Mariott, Wyndham El San Juan Hotel. A little out of the BIG nightlife scene, but only by about 10 minutes are Sheraton Old San Juan and El Convento (El Conv. has been continously selected one of the best hotels in the world and it is in the heart of Old San Juan). In this area you are near the sights of Old San Juan, the stores, the beaches, but its the city, so romance is limited... although walking through the cobblestone streets of old san juan or sitting in the ancient benches oiver looking historic forts during a Caribbean sunset is pretty romantic.
If you want to give up the night life, a little, you could stay at the Wyndham El Conquistador with good food near by, the only Rainforest in the USA, its own private island... this hotel is more romantic and it is a great hotel alltogether. For nightlife, there are smaller clubs where locals frequent, but you aer only about 30mins away from the vibrant nightlife of San Juan.

Check out St. John U.S. Virgin Islands. You have 2 resort style places to stay: Caneel Bay and the Westin, and it is one of the most beautiful places on earth with 2/3 of the island as national park. Unbelievably romantic. The nightlife is laid-back but fun. Hey, Hollywood celebs come here just to enjoy the cozy Caribbean atmosphere. Yet this place has all the modern conveniences, too. And it's small so it really feels like an island. Two restaurant suggestions for those romantic dinners: Asolare (chic on hillside looking towards St. Thomas, and Miss Lucy's.
