Nassau & Paradise Island

We are going to Nassau in a couple weeks with our three children. Do you have any recommendations for good restaurants and for keeping our eating expenses minimal, so we can splurge on fun?

We just got back from a week at paradise Island. We stayed at the Comfort Suites which was really convienent to the Atlantis Hotel. The food was not very good. We ended up bringing an entire suitcase of sodas, chips, crackers, stuff for sandwiches. There is a little market on Paradise Island and it was really expensive. $4.50 for a six pack of soda. Potatoe chip bags that were clearly marked $.99 were selling for $2.50. The selection was really poor. The two pool side eateries at the Atlantis near the Royal towers were reasonable. They were called Shark Bites and Dive In. You could get a kid's meal of hamber or hot dog, french fries and a drink for $5. The Atlas Bar and Grill was decent as was Anthony's Caribean Bar and Grill. The Blue Marlin was also decent in both quality and price. Weate at the Green Parrot and was very dissappointed. Only outdoor seating and lots of flies. You would save the most money by bringing as many snacks as you can. There was also bingo 5 nights a week and a kids craft activity right after bingo that was fun and free and don't forget free movies at the Atlantis Thursday thru Sunday.

I have travelled to Nassau once a year for the past 11 years. There are many inexpensive ways to keep food costs down. I do always bring things like crackers, canned oysters, beef jerky, and nuts to bring to the beach. If you eat just across the bridge from Paradise Island, there is plenty of low cost places to eat, including Burger King which offers the freshest burgers and fries you will get anywhere. Paradise Island itself is very expensive to eat around. There is a very low cost/convenient general grocery mart on East Bay street. You can get a map of the island at the airport or department of tourism. A jitney,(small bus that local natives use for transportation), will get you there or anywhere on the island of Nassau for $1.00, Otherwise a taxi driver should be able to take you for no more than $6.00 each way, and on a hot day, it's worth it. Otherwise, if you look closely, there are several small native "corner stands" that sell fresh conch salad, seafood, and chicken, especially under the Bay Bridge that connects Nassau to Paradise Island. All the natives eat at these places and they are very clean and safe to eat from. If you ask the local natives, they are more than happy to tell you where you can eat for "cheap". Bahamians' (pronounced Ba-hay-me-anns), are a very cordial and gracious people.

Murray's Deli on Atlantis property overlooking the marina is great, and more reasonable than most. They also have a good kids' menu.
I thought Murray's Deli was cheap diner quality food, not a bit better (as of last week).
And man is it overpriced (like everyplace else at Atlantis).
The food is generally greasy, cheap quality ingredients (cheeses, sauces, fruits, etc).
It's convenient, but definitely nothing special.

Nassau is dump, but Paradise Island is nice. If you stay in the Atlantis you could get a meal plan which was great. Two plans are offered, one is a tad bit expensive but lets you eat at any restaurant in the hotel. The other plan is very reasonable and allows you to eat at the Hotel's buffets.
