More Cap Juluca questions
Staying in a junior suite at Cap Juluca for a week this summer. Are these available on thte second floor of the villas and is there any benefit to being on the second vs. the first floor?

Average price of lunch and dinner at Pimms and George's?

We're not renting a car and intend to remain almost entirely at Cap for the duration. Is this feasible? Will we be missing much? We do want to do the Scilly Cay lunch bit but I understand it's closed in August. Can anyone confirm?

Are there flowers in the room, or should I order same?

Cap Juluca is the best place ever. We stayed in dec 2000, in a luxery suite, which is on the ground floor. Personally I loved the ground floor b/c it's like having your own private beach and entrance. The view from the 2nd floor is mesmorizing, you can see st martin very clearly. Depending on drinks, the rum punch is delicious, luch can be like $50-65, one day we splurged and had lobsters delivered to the beach and that was very expensive! Didn't rent a car, no need. Cabs are expensive though and that's the only way around. You must go to the straw hat and mango's for dinner. Scilly was awesome soooo expensive so if it is closed it will save you $$. No flowers in the room that I remember. The island is beautiful, very under-developed and the ppl are the nicest. The beaches are just so white and the water is crystal clear and blue as ever. You will have a very relaxing time and feel very special. Get a massage on your terrace by the beach!! Enjoy

Hi Kat-so, its almost here!

Cj's junior suites are in villas 1-3 and 10 and 11. In March we weere in 11-3, end room and the best views I have ever had from the lower room, same villa 12. The lower rooms have ease of beach access -path to your patio. The upstairs rooms have access at the fron of the villa and I think all have great views. Sometimes we prefer the east end villas 2-3 as the beach is very wide at this point and closer to Pimms and Georges. The West end villas naturally are further up the beach, narrower and some people love that end ,as the upstairs room give a full view of the curved beach. so, it really depends on what you like, both up and down are wonderful. Junior suite #5 in all the villas is popular as it has a stairway to a top floor sunning terrace.

Not having a car is not a problem, but it is nice to see all the other beaches. Hey staying at Cap the whole time is great, you can walk to Cove Bay, little beach bar Smokeys at the cove, not fancy, ok but the beach is in the natural state. It gives you all the info in the info book in the room.

I think Scilly Cay is open, but check gone fishing on www.news.ai The only day they are closed is Monday, and the meal you get there is huge. Pasta, french bread, lobster, crayfish or chicken, and deadly rum punches.

As for the flowers the maids will pick bouganveila(sp) and place it on your breakfast tray. The flowers you oder, or if on a package etc. are tropical. the room and view is so pretty, IMHO do not think flowers are necessary. But thats your call.
There is a well stocked complimentary refer. with coke, beer, etc and all the bottled water you csan drink.

If you get a chance pick up the latest copy of Conde Nastes Traveler, it has reastaurants in the caribbean and 3 are on Anguilla, Straw Hat, Malliouhana and a magnificent photo from Keemia at Pimms(my very favorite lunch place)

Have fun Kat!

i just returned from cap juluca, actually leaving there early because we were so unhappy with the place.if you're looking for a place with almost non-existant management,no staff on the premises late at night, doors that don't close, bugs in the room, broken drains in the shower, sinks that don't work,air-conditioning that breaks down, and tiny food portions with big prices, this is the place for you.best of all, when allthis was brought to the managers attention,he was nasty!!

i was just there last week, stayed in villa 9,room 6.when i talk about bugs,of course i expect them.the reason we had tons of bugs all over was because the glass wall in the shower was a foot from the ceiling.in the room they moved us to after our air conditioning broke, the wall went straight up.apparrently some rooms are more neglected than others.for all the hype and the cost for cap j,i really don,t feel that it was worth it.by the way ,after we left cap j we went to cuisinart,it was everything that we had expected cap j to be.by the way,the food portions there are at least twice the size, and they are not understaffed like cap j.the rooms are immaculate, and you can keep you doors open to the ocean view because there are screens on the doors!!

Well Amy sorry you had such a dissappointing time. I have stayed at CJ 9 times and never had your problems. Hey it can happen. Those heavy shuttered doors really are a nice touch-I thought the glass sliders in CuisinArt reminded me of any hotel, nothing special. At Cj we leave our doors open all day and only shut them at night, never had a big bug problem. I dine all over the island and have enjoyed excellent food in both hotels, the meals have always been adequate. CJ is far from understaffed its just spread out and has a set up more of a private villa compound then a hotel-CuisinArt has everyting more centrally located. Your experience is not the rule, that is why so many people return.
In May we stayed in both the Cap and the Malliouhana. The Malliouhana is my favourite resort but Cap was very, very nice. We stayed in a villa on the 2nd floor and had a great view. And we loved the bathroom with the glass wall which caused the previous poster so many problems! We did not have any problems with bugs, staff, etc.

However, I would highly recommend renting a car. Anguilla's charm is in the many beautiful beaches and amazing restaurants. You have to get out and explore. You would be missing out if you just stayed on Cap's premises the whole time.

Enjoy!

Talked to management at C.J. as I was concerned with my upcoming visit pending. They were very candid and felt bad about Amy and the problems she had(C.J. Management didn't refer to names, I got that from her post) but felt the post didn't bring out the whole story. They acknowledeged problems but felt they were very prompt in dealing with them, they told me that they were very apologetic and when they asked to shorten their stay there were no objections. I've stayed there several times, had a couple of problems but they were addressed right away. Guess you can't please everyone. I also don't agree with Cuisinart food portions over C.J. I had the opposite experience.

KMD: We stayed in an oceanview double room in the main house. We were extremely pleased with the accomadation. The room was very spacious. The view was breathtaking. I believe there are a few garden view rooms at the Malliouhana and I would not stay there. The view from the cliff is what is so special. We also liked staying in the main house as it was so easy to walk down to the bar for a drink or take a dip in the pool. Let me know if you have any more ?s. Malliouhana is such a special place.

Cap Juluca-
We did actually have a major A/C problem, it kept breaking. We spoke to the manager, robin ricketts, really nice guy, he was very apologetic, COMPED 1 night, and gave us a free dinner at Pimms, re-stocked our fridge w/ more beer and gave us complimentary bottles of wine. So needless to say we thought he was great! The bugs will happen though. There really is no wall in the room facing the beach, it's sliding french shutters and half the bathroom is kind of outside so it will happen. We stayed in 18, I think, which we liked, it was far but the walk is beautiful it didn' t bother us. Rooms don't have locks, it was weird at first but totally fine. They do have safes if you are worried. Anyway I still dream of CJ and we plan on going back as much as possible. I guess nothing is perfext but Cj is pretty close!

Silly Cay is open this summer on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. I just returned. Cap Juluca is wonderful. I have stayed many times. You will enjoy. I recommend renting a Jeep though. There are some other wonderful restaurants that you should try and the car rental is more cost effective than a taxi.

Just wanted to focus on you car rental question. My suggestion would be rent one for 2 - 4 days. While there certainly is no problem staying at the resort the entire time (agree with everyone who thinks it is glorious)the island actually has several reasons to jump in the car and go.

1. Visiting some of the other beaches - Shoal Bay (both of them), Meads bay and Malliouhana, and - especially - Little Bay. Drive into town by the docks and ask someone to take you to Little Bay. It is accessible only by boat (or by "absailing" down an old rope strung from the top of the cliffs that surround it). The boat will drop you off and pick you up 3 - 4 hours later. You should have this bay all to yourself. Amazing (better than Scilly Key in my opinion).
2. Visiting the restaurants. All the good ones everyone talks about - as well as some local places. The locals do go out to eat and those restaurants are good - and cheap! Good meat curries and curried meat wraps.
3. Just exploring. Seeing where the road leads. The island is small enough that you can never get lost.

By the way, the rental companies will drop off and pick up the car at the resort - very convenient.

Have fun.

Great info here on Cap Jaluca. My husband and I can't decide on CJ or CuisinArt.

Is it true that there are no locks on the doors and part of the bathrooms at CJ are outside, thus the bug problem? We have received brochures from both resorts and we were leaning toward CJ, now I'm not so sure.

Does anyone know if there is a bug problem at CuisinArt and do the doors have locks? Even though there are safes in the rooms, what about cameras and other items?

Thanks for all the great info.
