Market in San Juan?

Where is the outdoor (fruits and veggies etc.)market in Puerto Rico. Is it near the college and can you take a bus from Condado? thanks....

There are many markets in the San Juan area. They are called "Plaza del Mercado". There is one in Old San Juan by San Sebastian street.

There is another one in Santurce next to Condado, it is also an evening hangout when the stores close and the restaurants open. Ask for La Placita.

If you mean by college the UPR Rio Piedras Campus there is a market within walking distance in downtown Rio Piedras.

In the placita Roosevelt in Hato Rey there is an organic market every second Sunday.

Marigross....thanks for the answer. It sounds like Santurce would be the easiest to get to, it will be a Thursday. Will they have fresh fish, and can we get there by bus? thanks ever so much for the reply.

Yes, the Santurce Plaza del Mercado is small, but attractive and the closest to Condado. I have actually walked there from Condado. It's maybe 8-10 blocks from the Marriott. However, I did it with a group of people, and we know the area. As you walk from Condado to the placita, you go from the tourist area with high-end homes to a working-class neighborhood, passing under a highway bridge. For you, it would probably be better to take a cab. It would be a short cab ride. There are no buses that go north to south from Condado to the placita because that's a residential area with narrow streets. The area surrounding the marketplace has some cheap and good restaurants and it's also a great spot for "happy hour" nightlife from about 6:00 to midnight on Thursday and Friday nights. It's a very casual atmosphere and because it starts early, locals often even take their kids. You'll see all age groups and social classes mingling around the placita on these nights. These happy hour nights are also perfectly safe. The police cordon off some segments of the surrounding streets so that they are pedestrian-only and they keep an eye on the crowd so that it doesn't get too rowdy. This article mentions some of the restaurants around the placita: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6338897/

I'd really like to check out the market at Rio Piedras as I have heard that it's the best.

Is there a bus that runs to it from Condado or it necessary to take a cab?
