LIAT Airlines - Any Experiences?
Has anyone flown with LIat Airlines? I would appreciate hearing about your expereinces - good or bad. They have a direct flight from St. Thomas to Anguilla which looks like the best way to go if they are reliable.

Thanks for your time and your help.

I have flown LIAT many times. It tends to be late, but is a pretty good airline otherwise. American Eagle also flies between St. Thomas and Anguilla, at least they did this winter.

If I had to choose between LIAT and Am. Eagle, I would pick the one with a schedule and fare that suited my needs.

Hope this helps.

Diane,

WHen I worked in the islands, I flew LIAT many times. No really bad experiences, but we used to call LIAT Luggage Is Always Tardy, because they flew smaller planes and when there was a weight problem, they just took off some luggage.
The other nickname was
Leave Island Any Time, as the pilots would decide they had enough people on board, or the combination of people and luggage hit some magic number and they'd just tell the tower they were leaving. Now, I am talking about the smaller islands here. We flew one time and the pilot was warm, so he opened his side window and held his hands out to direct air into the cabin. No hands on the controls. Very exciting.
I would bet they've changed a little with the times and are more like a real airline now, and less like
The Rover Boys and Their Little Airline.
Your post brought back some neat memories.

I just spoke to American Eagle. they are not flying between St. Thomas and Anguilla at this time, the service may resume again later. (Their schedules fluctuate according to the tourist season.)

When they do fly, the flight is direct to Anguilla from St. Thomas or direct San Juan to Ang. Flights out of Anguilla fly either direct to San Juan, or via St. Thomas to San Juan.

So, since there are no direct flights at this time from St. T to Ang on the Eagle, it makes sense to look into LIAT.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I'm still not sure which way to go, but I have some time to decide. I like the directness of LIAT, but do want to get there with my luggage. Although I have had some bad experiences with American Eagle and their price is almost $200 more, I am leaning to them because they have a number of flights to San Juan and then to Anguilla and then on to Anguilla.

Go with what you feel most comfortable doing. LIAT used to be much worse but seems to be getting better. In fact, the last few times I have had more problems with AA and the Eagle than with LIAT. So who knows!

Funny to read the LIAT jokes again, though!
Luggage In Any Town
Leave Island Any Time
Look Immediately Alternate Transport

I shall have to try thinking up some for AA and the Eagle.

Go with LIAT - in fact you really have no choice unless you want to go via PR on American Eagle - really a waste of time. There is a new airline on the scene - Caribbean Star Airlines but they do not fly to St Thomas and are not at all reliable. LIAT has had its share of problems but they are getting better - and they have the best saftey record - their pilots are extremely skilled in landing at some of the islands' rather small airfields, such as Anguilla - far better than the AA pilots in my opinion. Personally speaking, they have never lost my luggage - and the fares are reasonable.

I've flown LIAT 5 times during the last year. It has always been a bad experience, but the last was the worst. I arrived nearly 4 hours late in San Juan, missing my American connection, and had to stay at the San Juan Airport hotel overnight. Not only was the lead agent at LIAT rude with a terrible attitude, she made no apologies or had any suggestions on what I might do. Paying for my hotel room or a meal was out of the question. I've never been treated by any airline this badly.
I've got one more for you....LIAT stands for Last In Airline Technology.
I also like their new ad...it's something like "safer, faster, cheaper" Than what? Swimming?
