Last 2 wks of Jan - but where?

I've spent the past 5 nights doing research on the Internet, but I'm more confused than ever. My wife & I have the last 2 weeks of January for vacation, but need recommendations! We've been to DomRep (Bavaro Beach) five years ago, but want something new. It has to have a good beach, good swimming, and great food nearby. I like to gamble (craps), and activities outside the resort would be a big plus. We're in our early 40's and don't need the crazy nightlife scene. Recommendations, please!! Thanks...

If you like to gamble, Puerto Rico might be nice, all the big hotels have their own casinos. Another suggestion might be St.Martin/St.Maarten, which has nice beaches, casinos and as it is a French Caribbean Island, you'll find outstanding food all over the island.Check out for the hotel "La Samanna", they serve exquisite food.

Thanks for the advice. My wife stopped in to St. Martin on a cruise once, but wasn't big on it; I guess it was still pretty messy with hurricane damage.

Anyone else have some good suggestions? How about recommendations on St. Kitts. Anyone stay at the "Frigate Bay Resort"?

I would consider Aruba on top of the list. Puerto Rico is also a good place. Plenty of history, and all the mentioned activities you would be interested in.

Puerto Rico... Hmmm... I spent some time in the Navy, and every time I hear "Puerto Rico", I think of Roosevelt Roads NAS and nasty San Juan. Can't help it! Are the resort areas actually good? Is it not too "Americanized" (no offence to southern neighbours)? What about the crime levels?

Aruba would be a suitable destination. So would the Turks and Caicos. There is one small casino at the Allegra. Grace Bay on Provo (TCI) is unbelieveable. The is a good variety of restaurants but not alot of night life. In fact, Provo is rather laid back. We did enjoy an outing to the cave on Middle Caicos, an outing to the pirate cave on Provo and a snorkelling trip. We stayed at the Comfort Suites (not all inclusive, not on the beach but only a short walk away). We really enjoyed TCI and would not hesitate to return. Grenada is another excellant choice but there is no gambling. However, the rainforest hike, an island tour, the smell of spices and most importantly Grande Anse beach would make this an enjoyable vacation spot.

It sounds to me like you're more interested in a "resort oriented" vacation. If that's what you want, skip PR, even though there are casinos galore. There are no "resort areas" in PR in the sense that there are resort areas in the Dominican Republic, Cancun, and the like. The big hotels with casinos are concentrated in the San Juan beach areas, and these are an organic part of the city, with real city life all around them. They don't really have a "resort feel." Puerto Rico is more of a culture/adventure travel destination than most people's idea of a "Caribbean resort" vacation.

Hmmmmm PR and the Navy. From my understanding the Navy is no longer in PR. My son just left PR. If a resort feel is what you are seeking than forget PR. I have to agree with PRNative. I did not find PR to have any better or worse of a crime level than any other Island. You may consider Playa Del Carmen area. Mexico, Royal Hide Away. Great Resort and food.

ARUBA sounds like the perfect place for you - great beaches, great food, plenty of activities and gambling etc., but also peace an quiet if you like it.

St. Kitts might be a good idea. Way prettier than flat and arid Aruba. A casino or 2 not much nightlife, great swimming and OK dining in the resorts.
Or take a trip over to Nevis & stay @ the 4 seasons.

Another thought: Do a Fodors search on Radisson Aruba for additional info. Just what you need: More research!!!
