We are going there for our honeymoon July 16 for one week and then to Barbados for the next week. We are staying in the only cabana/room on the beach at Luluna. I've heard it's very romantic and secluded and has lots of daybeds around the property. It's a small hotel, only about 16 rooms. I think it looks great, the manager is so helpful and nice and the price is excellent (compared to the other hotels they manage- Hotel Isle de France on St. Barths and the Cotton House in Mustique) I think it's just less expensive b/c it only opened last December. Good luck.

I read alot of very bad things about La Source on several different boards (I know you need to take it with a grain of salt but it just soured my opinion about the place) and spice island looked kind of sixties and strange in internet pictures. i guess it's supposed to be nice, but who knows. Also, the beachfront room that we wanted seemed overpriced for what it looked like. So, we chose laluna.

If anyone is still checking this thread, I would love to know a bit more Laluna. The resort sounds just like the kind of place my husband and I would like, but somewhere I read that that the water at this location has seagrasses growing in it. Anyone been there or heard specifics?
Also, was the pool area appealing? The beach looked small from the site photos -- any comments on the overall appeal of the beach/water/pool area would be greatly appreciated. Also, I haven't heard any comments regarding the surf - any waves at this local?

My husband and are particularly interested in a smaller sized, romantic resort with a beautiful beach/water and ocean front accomodations that are not like standard hotel rooms. We particulary enjoy a spot with an unobstructed sunset view, and would be traveling during the off season so would appreciate comments on the weather during that time. Wouldn't want to be there at time that is traditionally very rainy, but can't afford high season rates. Thanks!

I am planning my honeymoon for October of 2002 and am considering Laluna. It looks wonderful-secluded, beautiful, relaxing, etc., and the management or whoever works there that I have talked to via e-mail have been very friendly and helpful. right now it is our number one choice. The only problem is airfare-which looks to be around $1300 for the two of us from Miami. Hopefully rates will go down.

One thing to notice, the honeymoon-type package they have does not actually look to be that great of a deal (if a deal at all) after having done the math comparing it to regular nightly rates.

I didn't look into LaLuna, but I did stay at Spice Island Beach Resort which was great - feel free to ask me questions about it. Our package deal through a travel agent was WAY less than the 'rack' rates. You should be able to get a good deal since Sept is offseason. Spice is on Grenada's best beach and is a quiet property - a good choice for honeymooners.

Fred, Spice Island is one of the choices for my honeymoon, Laluna being the other (that is IF I can find airfare that is cheap enough). How long did you stay at SI? Was the all-inclusive aspect worth it? It looks like to save money I will only be able to go for 5-nights, which based on the rack rates is only about $300 cheaper than their 7-night Passion in Paradise package. If you don't mind my asking, how much did you end up paying and how long were you there? One more question: How crowded was the resort and beach? (We are trying to avoid crowds)

Thanks for any help you can give!

My husband and I spent the first week of our honeymoon at Laluna. We had an amazing time. I was a little worried about the size of the beach and pool also, but I shouldn't have. It was perfect. The water was absolutely beautiful. We stayed in it all day. The pool was also great (I was used to the Ritz and Hyatt Regency with much larger pools but I really wasn't disappointed, it was just different.) As for our second island, Barbados, our supposed sure bet vs. Grenada which we thought was riskier, we didn't have a good experience at all. The beaches were full of coral and seagrass, you could barely walk into the water.
I would strongly recommend Laluna over Spice Island as it really did not at all seem worth it -we ate lunch and dinner there once while there. The rooms didn't look great - nothing like Laluna with carved Indonesian poster beds, Italian linens and open air bathrooms. Laluna is much more of an upscale, boutique hotel (it was featured in British Vogue among other magazines).I would go again in a heartbeat. Perfect for a honeymoon.
Good luck.

I am pretty sure all of the rooms at Laluna have private plunge pools, not big enough to swim around in but big enough for a couple to sit in and relax. My understanding about the 3 wall issue is that the bedrooms are fully enclosed and then there is a sitting area that is walled on three sides with the fourth (the one facing the water) being open. Sounds lovely!

I am still considering this for my honeymoon and am curious as to what there would be to see in the area or if they offer any excursions. Not really interested in shopping, more interested in nature and any historical sites. Anyone able to help?

Thanks!

For Gifford: I do not know if LaLuna "runs" excursions bu all the hotels in Grenada work with knowledgeable and dependable local guides for day trips. If you are interested in nature be sure to take a trip to the rainforest, including a hike to a waterfall for a dip! A trip around the island with a stop at the nutmeg processing plant and a rum distillery is also a wonderful way to spend a day in Grenada. The beach at LaLuna is not as large as Grand Anse but in my opinion is a prettier beach because it is so private. It is long enough for a nice walk and some quiet space! There are some wonderful restaurants for local food in Grenada if that interests you also. For John: another nice honeymoon spot (older and not as fancy as LaLuna but very Caribbean) is 12 Degrees North, a small apartment hotel of 12 units where each apt comes with your own housekeeper/cook. One of our favorite places to stay in Grenada.

I honeymooned at Laluna in July 2002. The rooms have a three walled bathroom, with a large open window in the shower so you can see right out to the ocean. The third wall is a bamboo/type shade that you can keep up or down. The bedroom itself has four walls (w/ AC, vcr and cd player and beautiful four poster bed, with french doors that open onto a private porch with a daybed (it's covered partly) has lounge chairs/pads that you can lay on if you wanted to sun there, and a plunge pool that you can sit in and watch the sunset.

Laluna is a beautiful, rustically elegant hotel. I highly recommend it at the off-season rate. If you visit the website at laluna.com you get an excellent idea of what the hotel really looks like.

FOOD:
The food at Laluna is exceptional. The food was so good that we signed up for the meal plan for the last 3 days of our stay. The meal plan is $55 US per person per day and includes a la carte breakfast and dinner. The standard fare is available for breakfast and for dinner you have a wonderful array of dishes to choose from. You can order anything from the enormous fresh lobster (we saw the fresh catch coming in one day and our mouths watered), to pasta to standards like filet mignon and chicken breast prepared with wonderful sauces and all dishes are presented beautifully. It is no wonder that Conde Nast named the restaurant one of the Hot 100 Tables in the world in 2001.

ROOMS:
We stayed in a cottage deluxe - the deluxe part means that you have your own cottage that is unattached to any other cottage. Definitely pay the extra few bucks for this option so you can have the added privacy. We had number 6. All the cottages with the exception of #1 require a hike up stairs or steep ramp. Even though cottage #1 is a deluxe and is the only one close to the beach I would not recommend it because it is at the same level as the bar and only a few hundred feet from the bar which equals less privacy if you want to hang out on the veranda or plunge pool and possible noise if there are folks hanging at the bar while you try to sleep. However, if you cant walk up stairs or if a fully unobstructed view is your top priority then cottage #1 is your only option.
The room itself is exactly as seen on the Laluna website. EXACTLY. Great décor and soft clean bedding. Be aware that the bathroom is an open air bathroom but it does have a roof and walls
what is open air about it is that the walls have large cut-outs with slats or bamboo shades for privacy.

SERVICE:
I cant say that the service was poor. It was just slow but no one was ever rude and our meals were never screwed up. Do you expect better when youre paying $290 plus 18% tax per night plus meals? Yes, but I could live with it the way that it was.

POOL / BEACH:
You have to stake claim to your chairs early in the morning (by 9:30am) so that you are not left without one. The pool itself is kind of small its certainly not a swimming pool unless youre in there by yourself. The beach however is perfect
calm, warm, clear
and generally free from beach vendors.
