Barb, don't think I have seen any Jeeps on Nassau. You really don't need a car there, since there is nowhere to park and there is so much traffic.

Depending on where you are staying there are buses and cabs, lots of cabs at your convenience. A car will cost $60 a day plus gas, and gas is very expensive in the Bahamas.

Have a great trip.

tweedy

Just a bit of advice. Unless you are from a country where you drive on the left hand side of the road, I would strongly caution you(or anyone else) against renting a car in The Bahamas. While riding in vehicles, i.e. taxis, buses, I constantly found myself thinking incorrectly(as if i were driving). I am convinced i would have had a wreck within 5 minutes of being there. It's not that I didn't know what side of the road cars drove on, but driving is such habit and instinct.

I remember when I was in Nassau years ago that the traffic was indeed very heavy and that the locals drive like maniacs. I wouldn't have wanted to drive in that by myself, on top of the fact that they drive on left.

I would also recommend taking cabs, and though cab drivers drive as crazy as the rest of them, at least they are used to it.

Barb - we did not rent a car while in Nassau but wished that we would have. We spent more on taxi fare in one day than renting a car would have cost us. We never stay right in the center of things, though - so if you are in town, you may very well not need a car. I always rent a car on Grand Bahama and have never had a problem driving. I have to really concentrate the first few minutes in the car before I pull out of the rental parking lot to orient myself, but after that, everything's fine.
