Jamaica - Never been there- seeking advice
Hi,

We do want to visit Jamaica. Trying to find a hotel that is on the beach to relax and do lots of nothing. Wish to avoid the large crowded ones. Our ideal is to lay out most of the day and then eat out in to try different foods and to shop some. No clubbing, not into the party vac. Both of us have a need to get away and rest.
Found on-line that the Reading Reef claims to have what we are looking for. Anyone ever stay there?
Same for places like Doctor's Cave.
Thanks in advance for any help.
JP

I beleive that both of the places you mentioned are in Negril which really is the best part of Jamaica ans sounds like what you are looking for. The beaches there aer beautiful and the smaller resorts aer alot more laid back, quieter, but close to the town.

I suggest you jump over to a web called:
www.negril.com There is tons of great information there and another forum as well where theh people are experts on the area.

The cliffs of Negril really are perfect for you. I know it's not the beach but there is the beach just a scotter ride away and it's SO private and relaxing-yet. There are many great restaurants but the cliffs are a few miles away from the the beach. My vote might be Tensing Pen. Beautiful. Really amazing property. Rockhouse is very nice too. Any place (just about on the cliffs). There are MANY places that are really great but to have dining choices Negril is perfect. Any questions you can see Jamaicans.com. Negril.com is nice but HEAVILY censored by the owner in favor of sponsors of the website.

Reading Reef is a small oceanfront boutique hotel/restaurant just off the main at the junction of the cross-island road from MoBay to the South Coast 15 min.west of MoBay. Run by a charming Englishwoman,it's quiet, budget-priced and a good value for its type. We often accomodate 'overflow wedding party guests' from DRAMBUIE ESTATE there. The beach is small, the bay waters calm. Small lunch/dinner restaurant and bar -- uncrowded, lots of UK visitors. It's removed from touristland. And you'll want a private driver/car/guide to explore beyond the obvious since MoBay has lots of thrash to wade thru -- it's a city --as well as some real hidden gems normally unfound by visitors.Doctor's Cave is 15 min away in the tourist strip but doesn't really offer more, except crowds and tourist shops, eateries. You may want to go further into Jamaica than just the usual tourist haunts (and Negril doesn't sound like a match at all for you, despite a superb beach). For the money and a real R&R getaway to the real Jamaica, go to the South Coast;rent a villa or stay at a small guesthouse. You'll find many on the Treasure Beach community web site at www.treasurebeach.net. For first-time island visitors, we also recommend
HORIZON/Sea Ranch and Rasta Ranch Cottages at Bluefields Bay, one hour across island from Mobay, also on South Coast. See jamaicaescapes.com
