islands where you don't need US passport?

Does anyone know what islands you don't need a US passport to visit (for labor day weekend - so it's before Sep 7)? We were looking into USVI because of this issue, but we are not finding anything there, in our price range, that really grabs us. Thanks!

Puerto Rico doesn't need a passport. It's a US territory.

The only Caribbean islands you can visit wthout a US passport are the US Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix), Puerto Rico, Vieques and Culebra.

You will need passports or at least evidence that you have applied for but not yet received your passports to visit every other island.

Think that you may need a passport if arriving by air but there is a hold on arriving by boat. For example, you can still go between the USVI and BVI with proof of citizenship and photo id if traveling by boat even tho a passport is recommended - but some of the ferrys between STT/STJ and the BVI require it anyway. Think the exception, created to help the cruise industry, is supposed to expire in 2009.

You need to carry proof of identity only for Puerto Rico (driver's license wil do). You need to carry proof of identity and citizenship for the USVI (but a birth certificate and driver's license will do). You'll be able to find something affordable in Puerto Rico.
