We spent 2 weeks there a few years ago and never did find any shopping.
As far as we're concerned this island is the pits. The beaches and snorkeling aren't as nice as the rest of the Caribbean, and a decent command of the Spanish language is a must.
We had heard so many marvelous things about it and we couldn't wait to go there. It was probably one of the biggest travel disappointments we have had.

We visited ( albeit for just a day - it was a cruise ) in '96. Only saw the Capital Porlamar - people were very friendly. The cheapest shopping is to be found in the local markets. Picked up some "Genuine" ( ??? ) Calvin Klein jeans - ditto Raybans. I can speak a little Spanish so we got by OK. Not the most affluent of Carribean islands judging by what I saw.
