I’m dreaming of an island...
I’m dreaming of an island with...
- the laidback vibe, friendliness, quiet, and beauty of Nevis
- with beaches like Vieques
- but not the price tag of Anguilla...
Does this island exist or should I keep dreaming? What would come close?
Bonus points for relative ease in getting there (from Northeast) and good food...
Any recommendations and opinions greatly appreciated!

Since you’ve already found what you love why not stick with it?
or sounds line Anguilla is your dream minus the price, which you will find similar prices for the same.
Maybe try an Out Island in Bahamas? Start with ábacos or Eleuthera

I’ll research the two islands you mentioned - thank you!
While we love aspects of Nevis and Vieques, the parts they are missing for us (Nevis, i don’t love the beaches; Vieques, I don’t love the vibe towards visitors) are significant enough to make me keep looking, if that makes sense.
Visiting anguilla seems like an obvious choice when I’ve researched —- but where we can find nice, pretty luxurious rentals for $400-$600/night in Vieques and Nevis, the same in Anguilla seems to be closer to $1k/night or more for the same. Unfortunately, that’s beyond what we can do... so I still welcome any new ideas for an island that might have the combo we’re looking for. Thanks!

Have you considered Virgin Gorda? It's still in the process of recovering from last year's hurricanes but the locals are making great progress. Although much smaller than Vieques or Nevis it has similar topography, wonderful beaches and some very enjoyable restaurants. It's a little difficult to reach but well worth the effort.
Look also at Grenada, it may meet your expectations.

Look into the bahama out islands - specifically Eleuthera. definitely friendly laid back old Caribbean vibe. I think the beaches may beat beaches of Vieques. Certainly cheaper than Anguilla. There are other Bahama islands that may also suit but I mention Eleuthera because I think it comes closest. In terms of flight - not bad - you jump on a connection from FLL.

lunajack: Take a look at Shoal Bay Villas: Welcome. Stayed there many years ago. Not luxury, but right on a great beach with a full kitchen.
