Carole, your kids would probably enjoy Agua Viva or Parrot Club or any number of other restaurants in OSJ. I had mistakenly envisioned them as part of the much younger chicken-fingers-and-mac-and-cheese set!
As for travel guides, I tend to read them all, which then lets me read between the lines a bit more for each destination. I like the Rough Guides, Fodor's, and one published by Houghton Mifflin called Best Places to Stay.
If you rent a car and spend time in theEl Yunque with hiking & waterfalls, you might want to also consider seeing the bioluminescent bay in nearby Fajardo (as long as you don't mind driving at night). It's supposedly not as spectacular as the one in Vieques, but if you and your family like the outdoor/natural adventure, I'd imagine you'd all enjoy it.
