Ciquetera usually causes nausea, loose bowels, fevers, then chills, sense of touch is reversed, what's hot feels cold and cold hot. That takes about two weeks to ride out. Just need to drink plenty of fluids. However, the fish and lobster you ate should not have any in them. Dengue fever has the same symtoms sans the bowels if I remember correctly. You could have a combination of dengue and some sort of stomach virus or you drank way too much alchohol too! Curious as to what you Doc says!

If you're still feeling sick, see the doctor. Could be giardia or some other parasite in ya! These little guys lay cysts in you and multiply; SO, if you're still feeling bad or getting even worse, well...connect the dots. The cysts wreak havoc in your intestines, and some are passed out of your body, so the doc can take a stool check to give you the cause. If it's something else other than a living organism using you as its host, you should be done with it by now. If not..see the doc!! Robert

Just ate some sushi rolls for dinner with a ton of ginger so maybe it will help with the nausea until I can get to the doc. tomorrow.

Sushi rolls? Alot of ingested parasites come from eating raw fish. Not to be a downer, but the ginger and wasabi can only do so much. Hope you feel better anyway. Curious what it is as you seemed to have picked it up in St. John.

Have to put my 2 cents worth in. I am an RN in a very busy Emergency Dept. (this could be my response to the proposed what does everyone do for a living thread). Recommend not wasting your time going to an Urgent Care facility. They really do not have the means to do a diagnostic work up. If you are dehydrated enough to be symptomatic, go to the ER. If not, treat your symptoms until you get to your own MD. Take in plenty of fluids and stick to lighter foods. Would not take any anti-diarrheals until you know you don't have a parasite as you don't want to keep it in so to speak. I would recommend getting a doctor appoint to be on the safe side and take in an "ahem" fresh specimen before you go.

I agree with Larry, MM, and Brenada, who's an RN. If it's been hurting for some time, get a diagnositic check up from a doctor. A Blood test is what you need. If it's a parasite, then there's some "poisons" they have that are harmless to you but will wipe out the lil' varmints from your system. Let us know what the diagnosis is. Robert

I finally talked to my doctor..he said that I should start to feeling better soon.If I wanted to he could prescribe something for the nausea and an antibiotic but today I feel alot better so I chose not to go.The doctor seemed to think that it was the water. The villa that we stayed at was kind of old so the water their could have had some parasites.

Christie,

I'm glad you're feeling better. But I'm surprised that you and your MD would choose to *self-diagnose* over the phone.

As many folks who care about you have pointed out, something could be lingering in your system.

As a mother of three, you need to be especially vigilant...for yourself and for them.

Just an opinion from someone with no medical credentials. But I think you need some answers...medically.

Take care..

Marion

Glad you are on the mend Christie. I agree that it is better to take ATB's only when you really need them. Next time no H2O. Drink beer instead. LOL!

thanks Marion..

Larry LOL...next trip I will have beer only..no more Painkillers to give the hangover then the craving for a chug of water.

I have read that some of the villas have water filtration systems...so for next trip will have one or stay at Caneel.

The cistern water, eh? I knew I couldn't trust that frickin' rainwater-from-the-roof-in-the-basement business! Next time, folks please remember to drink bottled water only in the islands. Most responsible restaurants make their ice from filtered or bottled water too. Hopefully, that's all that it was, Christie. Keep that chin up.

Christie:
I contracted giardia when in Mexico and it took several years before I was feeling better. A visit to a infectious disease specialist on advice of a nun I had met who worked in various missions around the world convinced me a regular doctor could not help. It took eight months to finally diagnose this simple bug which can be contracted anywhere - even in your home town - but more likely in foreign countries. Likely from improper food handling - can be from a street vendor to the most expensive restaurant - if food preparers and servers don't wash their hands - it is likely you'll catch something.

Christie: go to the doctor and get on some antibiotics right away. Why be miserable. If you have a parasite, then you are going to need the antibiotics to kick it out of you. This is why I am so afraid of a mexican vacation. We did Cancun on a business trip, but it was so hard to totally avoid the water. I was not relaxed about it all. My brother got very ill on his honeymoon and so I was careful, but St. John? I am surprised. I guess I assumed I would be safe drinking the water there. I hope you feel better. It is hard to be sick with little ones running around. On the bright side, if there is one, any weight you gained from over-eating on vacation should be long gone!!! Sorry, just trying to kid. Feel better.
