Honeymoon Recommendations

Hi-

I am doing research for a honeymoon and would love to hear your suggestions as to the best places in the Caribbean to spend our honeymoon.

what we want: Luxury ($$ not an object), good beaches for laying out, nightlife not important, good restaurants (either on the island or at the resort), privacy and seclusion at the resort, some water/beach activites, Television in room.

what we don't want: all-inclusives, no overly populated island, no kids or low amount of kids, small beaches and no pools.

islands we are avoiding: Jamaica, Aruba, USVI...in our opinion, we consider those to be to commercialized and not what we are looking for.

we are flying from JFK and don't mind taking a plane to San Juan, onto a puddle jumper onto a boat, if necessary to reach a resort!!

Anguilla offers great beaches (perhaps the best in the Caribbean), several upscale resorts (Cap Juluca, Cuisinart or Malliohana), over 80 restaurants, and no crowds. About the only thing on your list that you may not find is TV in your room (no room TV is pretty common in the Caribbean so if that is a big priority your choices are going to be extremely limited). By the way, CJ will put a TV in your room upon request but there are no cable or satelite hook-ups so you will only get a few "off the air" local channels, not worth the trouble IMO.

Little Dix Bay on Virgin Gorda is another upscale resort that will fill most of your requirements but here again there are no room TV's. There are some excellent uncrowded beaches and a handful of good restaurants around the island (but nowhere near as many as on Anguilla).

If room TV is important to you check out Carlise Bay on Antigua or Sandy Lane on Barbados. Both of these resorts are very upscale and will give you just about everything you want and the respective islands are large enough to offer a variety of restaurants and beaches.

I believe the recently remodled and re-opened Raffles on Canuoan in the Grenadines offers in-room TV. The food at their new restaurant is supposed to be quite good but there are no other restaurants of note on the island. I was there a few years ago when the resort was know as Carneage Bay so I can't be more precise in my description.

If money is truley not an object you might want to look at K-Club on Barbuda. This is a very chic upscale resort with an Italian flair and prices that would make a Trust Fund Baby think twice.

Peter Island (in the BVI's) is an upscale private island resort. It's accessible only by boat so you won't find crowds of any kind. The food is quite good and the rooms are well appointed (but no in-room TV's).

All of the resorts I mentioned have web-site where you can get loads of information. Good luck in picking your spot.

Have you looked at CuisinArt in Anguilla? Seems to fit all of your criteria.

Cuisinart has TVs. Anguilla is a great choice, excellent restaurants. You may also want to look into Parrot Cay and Turks and Caicos Club in Turks and Caicos. Peter Island is gorgeous, but people do come on day trips from Tortola there. (plus no TVs) Little Dix Bay is another great choice in Virgin Gorda. Four Seasons in Exumas another great choice. Have fun!!!

We are going to St. John for our honeymoon. We wanted to stay within a US territory (too much paperwork for my fiance's job to go out of the country!). I've heard nothing but fabulous things about St. John, beautiful beaches but not overcrowded.

We are staying at Gallows Point Resort. While it doesnt have a real beach (rocky beach but good for snorkeling), it had everything else we wanted. Gorgeous rooms! We are getting an upper ocean view room. It has a living room, kitchen, 1 and a half baths, and a loft with a king bed. Big balcony, and huge doors to open up for a great view of the ocean.

There are 2 other resorts on St. John. Caneel Bay and Westin. Caneel Bay was too expenisive for us. I have heard mixed reviews about the Westin. One thing I did not like about the Westin was it is very kid friendly. The Gallows Point Resort, is the exact opposite. They do not allow young children and even older kids are not recommended. I didn't want to deal with kids on our honeymoon!

Oh and there is also a television in the room!

Check out their website, www.gallowspointresort.com

I'm very excited about going there, I did a lot of research on the resort...and honestly, I never read anything bad. Most people raved about it.

When is your honeymoon? I will be going early June, and will be able to post a review then.

try Peter Island. BVI.
From sju you take a plane to tortola then a boat to the island.
went there for my honeymoon.
its exclusive about $700/nt inc. breakfast and dinner which is like a 5 course meal. not typical all inclusive type stuff. you order from a menu with items like rack of lamp, filet, tilapia etc...extensive wine list.
my second choice for my honeymoon was Petit st. vincent in the grenadines. only reason we didnt do that was because there was too much travel involved and the 2nd week of our honeymoon we were going to ireland.
again, very exclusive not easiest place to get to but really private and secluded.

I have a different take on Petit St. Vincent - went there a few years ago and were quite disappointed, so much so that we won't go back. The brochures and magazine articles we read paint a very lovely picture but we found the accomodations to be a bit on the rustic side (certainly not luxurious). The staff was rather cold and unfriendly, perhaps taking their cue from the owners who rarely smiled, said hello or even acknowledged our presence when you'd pass them on the property. If it weren't for a few words exchanged at the weekly "Manager's Cocktail Party" I have sworn they were "mutes". The bartender never seemed to recognize us dispite our best efforts to engage him in conversation. The wait staff at the restaurant just seem to be going through the motions - no real interaction with the guests. The beach activities director was hardly ever around and never "pre-rigged" the small small sailboats and Hobie Cats so they were not available for guests to take out when they wanted. The food was mediocre at best. Dinners were served luke warm (we never had a hot meal our entire stay) and tasted like they were cooked hours earlier and held under a heating lamp. The only thing that changed on the menu were the descriptions - Rack of Lamb on Monday, Lamb Chops on Tuesday, Medallions of Lamb on Wednesday, etc. - you get the idea. We charter one of their boats for a day trip to Grenada and the Captain barely said two words to us during the entire trip. The "Flag System" for ordering room service, drinks and afternoon tea sounds unique but in theory it doesn't work very well. We often had to wait 30 to 45 minutes for a cocktail to be brought to or cottage or beach palapa.

To be fair, while we were there, we met a couple who were repeat guests (been there 5 or 6 times)and they kept raving about the place and the food but honestly we just didn't feel the resort was up to the same standards as Little Dix Bay, Cap Juluca, Peter Island, Sandy Lane, etc. In our book there are pleanty of other places that are so much better than PSV.
