Harbour Island

Perhaps 10 or more years ago, we spent a week there and liked the island very much. The long pink sand beach is one of the most beautiful in the world. I think things have recovered from the hurricane last year. Nothing will have changed much in Harbor Island since we were there. If you swim out a ways from the shore there is some rather nice coral and snorkeling. We stayed on the other side of the island from the beach and would not recommend that location. There are several nice places however overlooking the beach. The island is small and you can easily walk across it or into town. About teenagers, here is what I suggest. Have them do some research on the Bahamas and Harbor island. They can find a lot of info in the library and on the web pages. They can decide if they want to go. Why should you have to worry about what your teens are going to do? However, if they don't like to spend time with nature, with their family, and cannot entertain themselves. Perhaps, Harbor Island is not for them. Early in the year, the ocean temperature would be a little on the cold side for me and we would choose June or July for a visit.

You have found my favorite spot in the WORLD. Harbour Island looks like a 1700's fishing village, which it was, and was once the capital of the Bahamas.
Most of the homes, especially on Bay St were built in the late 1700's to the mid 1800's.

With teens, I would recommend Coral Sands or Pink Sands. Pink Sands is more expensive but has more to offer, a nice pool and tennis. The accomodations at Pink Sands are vills and most have breathtaking views of the water.

There are so many good places to eat and several new shops have opened, but the earlier post is right, things haven't changed there much, although there are more tourists going there now.

It's much easier to get there as of this year there is a new ferry service that goes twice a day from Paradise Island and the website is www.bahamasfastferries.com

I have been going to Harbour Island at least a couple of times a year for 15 years, so I know the place very well.

One thing I think your kids will love the place and you won't have to worry about them, the island is very safe, they will be able to explore on their own without any problems.

One hint the BEST HAMBURGERS in the world are at Ma Ruby's Tingum Village,

There are a few night spots and your kids should be able to meet other teens as well.

There are 2 dive shops on the island for snorkle or dive trips and you can snorkle right off shore to a pristine coral reef with an amazing display of fish.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

[email protected]

tweedy

I have met lots of honeymooners over the years on Harbour Island, and then you go back every year, the island is that beautiful.

There are several nice places to stay and since the island is very laid back, you will have lots of time to just relax.

There are also several nite spots and even a bar or two overlooking the ocean.

A fun thing to do would be a picnic on an out island for the day, that's the two of you on a deserted island with food and drink (and sunscreen, lol).

If you need any other information about the island, please let me know.

Have a wonderful trip.

tweedy

Our best friends took us to The Pink Sands Resort on Harbour Island. what do you say? it was gorgeous! we stayed in the Andros villa. It was exquisitely decorated in Moroccan decor. Our view was stunning. The food was unbeatable. We tried many new things and not one of us ever had a dish that was not delicious! It is a very quiet place so depends on what your kids like. Snorkelling and boogey boarding was great. We went in February and the water was a bit cool but were in every day. The beach really is pink and feels like powder. There really is not much to do but relax! The staff were friendly and not overbearing (considering cottages are $2000 Cdn per night!) Keep your eyes peeled for celebrities ` Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon and family were there in February at the same time as us. We would return in a heartbeat and will probably be spoiled forever. Other resorts of the island looked nice and were not as expensive.
