BVI, Grenada or Young Island
I am planning a trip August 7th-14th and am trying to choose a spot. I am thinking of BVI (Biras Creek, Bitter End), Grenada (Calabash) or young Island. I here both BVI and Grenada have a festival during this time. Has anyone been? Also, I am worried about the weather at this time of year-comments? I like beach/water and exploring, but I do not want my partner to feel isolated-he will need music in the evenings etc. all ideas welcome!

Dorrie,
I have visited the BVI, Grenada and the Grenadines (but not Young Island). All are great destinations, but in August, a big concern should be weather -- you are in hurricane season. The more southern islands are considered to be less vulnerable to the storms, which may argue in favor of Grenada. But in any case, in the unlikely event you are hit by a hurricane, you will have advance warning of the storm with opportunity to prepare. My friends and I rode out a hurricane in the BVI in September 98 and were well taken care of -- thanks to the Moorings. Trip interruption insurance is key.
Aside from the threat of hurricanes, August weather is a bit warmer than the rest of the year, and the cooling trade winds may lay down a bit and not provide the respite you may need.
For evening activity, your partner may feel a little isolated on Young Island. It is very self-contained. You may also find the BVI a bit quiet, as many establishments shut down for August/September (Foxy's, for example, is closed). I don't know about Grenada, but if there is a festival at that time, you may have enough diversions.
Feel free to e-mail me directly if you have further questions.

Dorrie,
The last time we were in Grenada, we stayed at Secret Harbour, and I would stay there again. However, if it matters to you, Secret Harbour does not have a beach. Nevertheless, it is a unique property, with unique rooms overlooking Mt. Hartman's Bay -- 4-poster beds, brick arches, tile floors, huge bathrooms, balconies. Lots of boat and water activity at the resort. A pool that seems to be overhanging the bay. Also, be aware that the hotel is sited on a hillside -- a bit of stair-climbing to get around.
Good luck narrowing down your choices.
