Grand Bahama Island restaurants??

My husband and I are staying at the Westin at Our Lucaya in February. Need suggestions for good restaurants and local sighta. We have traveled a lot in the Caribbean and enjoy boating, fishing, and seeing the less touristy side of an island--as well as the beautiful beaches. Also do we need a car or are taxis readily available?

I am sorry that I do not have any help for you, but would you mind posting when you are back to let us know how you liked the hotel?

Thanks and good luck!

In the hotel complex there several dining options, all on the expensive side. We liked China Beach and China Grill, the Prop Club was good for snacks, and Iries was good Caribbean food. But, again, the prices are high and higher. Just across the street is the Lucaya marketplace that has multiple places to eat and drink. There are some really good places there, ranging from pubs to full scale dining venues. Prices will be somewhat less than within the Westin/Sheraton complex. If you have a car then you can try some places further out, like Simply Native, Bishops out toward the east end, and others.

There is a very active GBI news group that might be of value to you here:

Woo hoo, we just got back from the Westin (I was just going to post a trip report). I have to say it was the most pleasant property I ever stayed at -- beautiful grounds, lovely pool, nice clean beach, great staff, etc etc.

You won't need a car -- taxis right out front, and there is a bus stop too.

We had only 3 days there, and spent the whole time lounging by the pool and walking the beach, so I can't comment on what's off property.

Overall, the food on the resort properties (Westing + Sheraton) is more expensive, for what you get, than the food at Marketplace. There is a greater range of price (and quality) at Marketplace.

Resort Restuarants:

Although it is not on the menu, you can order fruit juice (like pineapple juice) from the poolside bar for only $2.50. Compare to $5 for beer and $8 for rum punch.

The Prop Club serves grill-type sandwiches in baskets, on the beach. We went there twice, DH ordered the Jerk Burger both times and loved it.

We went to the buffet-style Barracuda's for breakfast, around $15. The omelet bar and fruit salad was nice, but the rest of the buffet was mediocre.

The breakfast buffet at Willy Broadleaf's is around $20, I think. It is more ambitous (lots more variety), and much tastier.

We ordered a poolside meal -- chicken teriaki wrap -- from China Beach. It was adequate, but not great.

Across the street at Marketplace:

Domino's pizza has a discount coupon inside the maps that are available everywhere. There is also a Subway.

The best meal we had was at the Pub.

The most expensive meal was at Pisces. Don't order beef in this seafood restaurant (S2 did and couldn't eat it). Otherwise, reasonably tasty but overpriced.

Cally's was not bad, not great. They have more native dishes on the menu.

DH liked the $5 breakfast at Zorbas.

We really like Cappucino's - surpisingly great Italian food. Also, Zorba's is consistently good. The Westin is lovely, as are the suites at Pelican Point. If you like conch, the best conch salad on the island is right in the square at Port Lucaya - look for the "conch man" cart.

Just returned from the Westin--had a wonderful time--stayed at the rooms at Lighthouse Point. The resort is beautiful and the room was very nice. Lighthouse Point is quiet--the infinity pool was incredible--the gym and spa were right around the corner from our room. As is typical with most Westins, the personnel are very customer service oriented--everyone we met was helpful and very polite. Didn't think the food was that expensive--just typical of a resort. The Prop Club was great for lunch--a pretty view and good food. We ate at Churchhills one night--excellent food, sevice was a little slow--my husband had one of the best steaks ever--a bone in rib eye. Also ate across the street at Lucianno's--it was highly recommended and was very good. Appeared to be somewhat of a local place--the food was excellent. Restaurants at the Market Place were okay--certainly nothing special--we ate several lunches there but it was just sandwiches. Ate one night late at the Pub--would not recommend it--food was old, cold, and not good at all. We also ate a very casual meal one night at the informal restaurant inside the casino--it was very good. We really enjoyed the trip--the island was quiet (probably because of the time of year) and definitely warmer than home!
