Going to Negril, any suggestions??

I have heard so many things about Jamaica, most of which are not so good. I still want to go, and have booked a trip to Negril with two other friends for December. I have done a tremendous amount of research, and understand the lifestyle differences between the US and Jamaica, but I am a true believer that a friendly smile, a sincere interest in people, and respect for their home will get you a long way in enjoying a vacation! What I need is to hear from seasoned travelers that have been to Negril, someone to give me some tips and suggestions. All help is appreciated. Thanks!

my husband and I just came back from negril and montego bay..In negril we stayed at hedonism 2 and sandal's negril which is just right next door..Big difference...If you are single, wants to party, and willing to let it all loose stay at hedonism..."Everything is everything" is their motto...the rooms are not that great..no TV no clocks...If you're there to relax and also somewhat party stay at sandals...This is our 2nd year going to JA and I must say we always have a great time...

Don't fret. You made a great destination choice. We are well traveled and just did our first two week stint last year. Going back for two
more weeks in feb 02. We put together
a first timers brouchure that we e-mail out on request. We think you would find it quite interesting. Dan and Ginny

We have been to Jamaica numerous times and Negri is by far the best part of the island. There of course it a fair amount of crime and poverty in Jamaica and the vendors can gt rather pushy but all you need to use it street smarts. WE find the majority of people in JAmaica to be rather friendly, very accomondating to talk with and pleasant.

Negril has great calm waters for water sports, long white stretches of beach adn the most beautiful sunsets.

With your open attitude, you'll do just fine in Negril. Get some perspective tho by taking a day away from the resort town and hiring a good guide and private car/driver to go exploring along the South Coast.Start early. Go to the big covered produce market in Sav/Savannah La Mar, a bustling hurry-hurry Jamaican town 20 min to your west. Have lunch at the jerkstands at Bluefields Beach or go up into the mountains to the lagoon and river waterfalls at the Blue Hole Gardens. Or have lunch at Culloden Cafe in Whitehouse en route to Black River where you'll find fun, if touristy, cruises into the Great Morass for crocodile/wildlife viewing. You'll enjoy Negril and Jamaica more by going
outside the boundaries. That could be the true reward for all the good research you've done.

Hi,

I have been to Jamaica and thought Negril was the best part. It is beautiful - stunning beach and delicious food. The Italian restaurant at the Beachcomber is excellent. There are lots of roadside "jerk" stands that also have delicious food. We ate at a lot of local places and it was fabulous - try the jerk, the curried chicken and lobster, etc.

I also found the people to be very friendly as a general rule. Sure, there may be some rude or hassling people but they are everywhere! [e.g. we just got back from a weekend in New Orleans where you get hassled from people with these weird scams - didn't detract from a great holiday in a great city!].

Irie, mon!
