Getting to Vieques via San Juan Airport

We are in the early stages of planning a trip to Vieques next spring and will be flying into SJU. We have heard sufficient horror stories about the ferry to spend the extra money and fly on one of the island hopper carriers. Any recommendations on what carrier to use? Any particular good or bad experiences? Do you have to leave SJU to another site for the connection or is there a gate at SJU which serves the smaller inter-island carriers?

I appreciate any information.

Thank you. What is your airline of choice and do you depart from SJU or SIG?

Cape Air is usually very reliable for us- they fly out of SJU.

Also done private charters which are easiest but more expensive.

I doubt you'll find much of a difference in local airlines so pick the airline that works best for your schedule and budget.

Personally, if you are coming into SJU from somewhere else it will be easier to fly from SJU to VQS rather than have to cab it over to SIG but either airport works.

We always take Air Vieques, which is quite a bit cheaper than Cape Air , and have gone from both SJU and SIG. Even with cab fare to SIG it is cheaper. Dpending on whether your first flight comes into the same building as the vieques flight, it is sometimes actually easier to hop in a cab than to schlep in the heat to the other building.
