Flown AJ many times and never had a problem. Highly suggest you check into the 1st class upgrade. I think they will let you upgrade for an additional
$80 bucks or so if there are any spots when you check in. This is especially nice on the return trip as you get to go to the 1st class lounge while waiting to board. This is a REALLY big perk if your flight is delayed. Other than that, it is a nice airline.

We flew Air Jamaica once and liked it a lot - nice people, nice planes.

However, flying out of Montego airport was a pain - no monitors to tell us which gate plane was leaving from, or when. (Some of the other airlines did have monitors for their flights). Perhaps this has improved since we flew 4 years ago?
We flew home last christmas (montego bay to JFK)on Air Jamaica after American Airlines cancelled our flight 2 days is a row. If not, for Air Jamaica we would have been stuck on the island for days. I would suggest if you can upgrade to first class do it. Coach is VERY crowded. Service was minimal (no better or worse than any other airline) and security was fine. On all Caribbean islands, its very low-tech, at least it used to be-I'm not sure what its like now.
Just went from JFK in NY to Montego Bay on Air Jamaica the week of Oct. 25 and the security at JFK was tight- bags were X-rayed before entering the airport. Air Jamaica was fine- the plane was fine and the service good- good movie- Legally Blonde and it was free, as were beers and champagne. It got us into the Jamaican spirit.

Now, on the way out of Montego Bay on Air Jamaica. Security was INTENSE. First my suitcase was opened and sifted through. Then my carryon went throught the xray machine where people were being checked with the metal wand thing. Then, right before it was time to board the plane at the gate there was a long line while they had a table set up and each carryon was sifted through (they took matches from my purse). Right before getting out the door to the plane we were all waved over AGAIN with the wand. It took time but I felt pretty secure on the plane and the flight home was good.

I took that same flight and had the car pick me up at 5am- so I could be there at 5:30am from Manhattan. I was perhaps a tad early, but since you have to put your large bags through the xrays you'll avoid a long line if you're early. also, there are carts to rent - i would get one since it's a bit of a ways from the time you get out at the curb through the xray then through the check in line- I packed a lot and needed that cart! Have fun!!!

Have flown Air Jamaica several times. They still belive in service. You get free Champage or Red Strip (Jamaican Beer). I suguest the beer. Security was tight before 9/11 so I am sure they have steped up there security. They have a Margaritaville just out side our gate in MoBay. How convenent. You can even eat the food. The airport is different than you will encounter that the states us less you have been to Key West lately. But this is an adverture, so enjoy.

Paul- the airport is just less modern- you walk down the steps to get on/off the plane- no jetways. I love that- you feel like you're in the bradys go to hawaii episode or something like that! the airport is just smaller and more island style but as I said before, the security is the same or better. Have a blast!
