Expensive flights
We are planning a trip to the BVI in Feb. 2002. It's obviously too early to book flights now as the prices are terrible. I'd be interested in hearing other's advice regarding the timing of ticket purchases. Have there been airfare sales in fall or early winter in past year's? Thanks!

we went to tortola in april of 2001 from jfk and paid $2400.00 for 2adults and 2 children and we booked 8 months in advance. After we booked the seats I checked prices every week until we went and never saw the price go down only up.The other thing is that seats get booked early and you will find that there will only be night flights left. Its never to early to book seats.

I just booked a flight for 4 adults 2 weeks ago from chicago to st. thomas on AA in Jan. 2002 for $454.10pp. You must check all sites DAILY. travelocity, priceline, travelguys.net, cheaptickets.com, economytravel.com, efare.com, hotwire.com. There are many many more. Also check the airline sites. Prices can swing $500!!! in one day. I was watching prices around the $500 range, logged on the next day & they were $1000!!! The next day I found ONE site with $454.10. My travel agent still showed $1000 so I bot online, QUICK. I don't travel much & have no insight into the the airline industry.
I just kept checking.Be persistant.
You don't need to fly into the BVI. Go to St. t. & take the ferry to the BVI. Just don't miss the last ferry out.Doug

It is NOT to late to book your flights.
Rather you may be pushing your luck to find available seats on good flights at reasonable cost. Yes you may be able to find seats a little cheeper on an
evening flight on an off day.(if you want to do it that way) For me anyway
I consider "time is money" and when it comes to vacations....I want to get to my destination the quickest and most
efficient way.
Good luck!

Mark, are you a member of AAA? They may be worth a try...I've been checking and waiting for prices to come down for a trip from Tampa to Cancun in November. I've constantly checked, and the lowest air I ever saw was $561. On a lark, I decided to "do it the old-fashioned way" and call my local AAA office. Guess what? $449!!! (They said they use consolidators.) Good Luck!

I think anything below $500 to St. Thomas is a great deal. Also check flights into Puerto Rico, there used to be (in 1999) a small airline, Cape Air, that was flying $99 round trips from Puerto Rico into St. Thomas. So if you get a really good price into San Juan, you can still come out ahead switching to Cape Air. Cape Air operates in the Martha's Vineyard/Nantucket area in the summer, Caribbean in the winter. They use small propeller planes.
