Driving in Barbados

We will be travelling via cruiseship to Barbados staying 1 short day. Upon arrival we will be met by friends who have offered the use of their car for the day. Not sure how we are going to obtain the permit we will require in Barbados. We will have the required international licence. The owner of the vehicle has notified his insurer, but not sure where or how to obtain the permit as we will be at the cruise docks. It is Jan 1 a holiday on the island and I'm not sure what is open.
Anyone have an idea how to handle this. We were so fortunate that we have the use of the car for the day to tour with our family of 4.
Driving on the wrong (right) side of the road is not an issue as we have travelled down under for months on end and we have toured Barbados many times in the past. Round abouts here we come...
Time is ticking and need to figure this all out.
thanks all.

This is very simple when you arrive go to the nearest police station and get a local drivers permit it will cost you $5USD
Police stations are open 24/7

With or without the cars owner in tow. These are elderly people and we really don't want to cause unnecessary work for them.
Always in the past we have rented a car, picking up the permit in Hole town.
Anyone have an idea what the nearest police station is to the cruise terminal.

Thanks for the info, had sent a query to www.barbados but have yet to have a response.

There is a central police station in the city a taxi will charge $10USD.there is also black rock police station, taxi $15USD or less.Central Police Station is about 1000metre from the port. Most likely the owners of the car will be there to give them a ride to Central,if not who will provide the keys and show them the car.

The owners of the car are quite elderly..they will meet us at the cruise dock with 2 cars so they can return home. I am trying to make things easier on them. We will drive to their house at the end of the day and take a taxi back to the ship.
Will we have to get the permit before we can drive the car? If so we will have to find the police station first and then proceed from there.
