Deciding between Nevis, Caymans, St. Croix and Bermuda

My husband and I have one week off at the end of July. We are both golfers and scuba divers so these islands (Nevis, Caymans, St. Croix and Bermuda) seemed most appropriate. However, we are concerned about it being hurricane season. We have tried to figure out what would be the safest bet but no one on the islands seems to offer much info on hurricane paths and season. Does anyone out there have some answers. We would really appreciate your help. Sincerely, Colleen

You probably should just pick the island you want to go to the most, get travel insurance, and cross your fingers. It's hard to say whether any of the choices pose more of a risk than the others -- I am going on a Caribbean cruise in July and keep getting different answers about when in hurricane season is the worst, so far I have been told August, September and early November! I can tell you that Nevis was hit badly twice in the last several years, I believe St. Croix was hit several years ago, don't think Cayman or Bermuda have been hit in a while. I am told that Aruba and Barbados are the safest bet cause they are out of the hurricane zone but since neither are included in your choices . . .I'd go where you want, the odds are in your favor.

The height of the sesason is late August and September, so go for any. Bermuda is the most Northern, and has great weather in July. Bemuda has not sustained the damage from any hurricane over the years like St. Croix, or Nevis.

We have visited Bermuda for many years and will be travelling again the first of Sept. Great golfing - lots of courses to choose from. As well, there are several boats you can charter to take you out diving.

Caymans is a beautiful Island with lots of diving - probably better than Bermuda although they had sustained a lot of damage several years ago from a hurricane. However, having said that, I am sure the diving is still fantastic!

Both islands are expensive and quite different. Enjoy Bermuda as a British "outpost". Easy going, quiet, no "fast food" outlets here. Whereas Caymans are more commercialized and certainly has more nightlife.

Enjoy your trip!

Have been to Bermuda and Nevis. If golfing is a priority and you plan to do it more then twice, Bermuda has more course to choose from. Nevis only has one course, although it is more picturesque. Have fun!!
