* beaches: Luquillo, Seven Seas
* Pinones boardwalk, beach & mangroves
* Guavate (Cayey) for lechon
* kayaking in Fajardo or Humacao
* Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve

For a day trip consider:
El YUnque rainforest + afternoon at Luquillo beach and then if the moon phase is right do the bio bay from Fajardo
or
Head south Ponce
or
head into the mountains maybe around Guavate
You could head west to Rincon or cabo Roja - but that would be a long drive - consider staying overnight to make the drive less of a hassle

If we go to Vieques for the day, on the 9 AM ferry (Saturday), what would be the best beach there for snorkeling and swimming? And I know we'd have to rent a car on the island - any recommendations on that? Thanks!

The effort to get to Fajardo for the ferry is the same whether you're heading to Culebra or Vieques ... both ferries leave from the same terminal.
We've been to Flamenco beach on Culebra and Sun Bay beach on Vieques. Both are beautiful. Personally, if I had to choose just one, I'd go to Flamenco on Culebra. That is a breathtaking crescent of white sand with sparkling turquoise water. Just like a postcard. And the snorkeling to good there, too.
In either case, if you're just plan on going to one beach for the day, don't bother with a rental car. There are ample taxis available right when you get off the ferry. The fare is only a couple bucks per person. It's hardly worth the hassle of renting a car just for the day, IMO.
Also, if you're going to either island via ferry on the weekend in June (or July) plan to arrive at the ferry in Fajardo at least an hour (or more) before the ferry is scheduled to depart. It gets very crowded on summer weekends, and once they sell out tickets, that's it. They only sell a set number of tickets per trip.
There's some info that may help in our travel guide ...

Thanks for all the help! We have a car to use so transportation isn't a problem. Now I'm interested in the Vieques BioBay tour given by East Wind Cats. Has anyone used them? Of course they have the regular snorkeling trips during the day, but the BioBay trips leave Fajardo at 5 PM and return about 11 PM.
