Charlotte Amalie Hotel
I need a hotel room in Charlotte Amalie for one night in December. Our flight will arrive late and we leave the next day by ferry for Tortola. We would just like something clean and safe and convenient. Any thoughts?
Thanks

For convenience, I'd second the recommendation of the Holiday Inn. It's right on the waterfront and has a restaurant if you don't feel like getting out of the hotel. Hauling yourself all the way out to the Marriott would be a waste of both time and money, in my opinion.

We needed an overnight also on a trip 2 years ago and decided to make it convenient so we stayed at the Holiday Inn right in-town. It is adequate but a bit run down, unless they have renovated since 2004. But, it is near some good restaurants, the duty free shops are right there (watch out, the bargains are few unless you have thoroughly researched a watch, camera or other electronics, you usually can get it for the same or less in major cities in the US). If you want to haul liquor around that is inexpensive but you might have trouble getting more than 1 liter into your next destination.

While Emerald Beach is convenient I think when we checked it was about $60 more than the Holiday Inn (in-season after 12/15 or so). If you want a pool and similar amenities it is worth it and nicer but if you wantto browse the town-ONLY until ~5:30 (not desirable at night, we were advised) then Holiday Inn really offers more options and several dining options within 3 blocks.

I agree with marbleheadguy except if you have not visited the 20+ duty free shops in Charlotte ama;;ie this is an ideal trime to do it ny staying at the Holiday Inn. As a business travelers for 37 years before retiring I avoided Holiday Inns'a as well except if they were located in an area of "real" interest to me.
If you have a flight before 10 AM the next day if you stayed at the Holiday Inn you would want to leave the Holiday Inn 2 hours before yur scedukled deparure. At that time the taxi to the airport would be 15-20 minutes at a cost of $8+/- (2004 cost). If the duty free shops are not of interst to browse in I too would stay at the Emerald Beach and you would be a 5-7 minute ride to the terminal.

Arriving on a late flight, a taxi drops you smack in front of the door. The next morning you walk across the street to the ferry. You're not going to get mugged.

Carrybean you beat me to it. They are getting carried away for no reason! As I stated before, in a response that was deleted. These folks arrive late at night and will be taken straight to the hotel. They leave first thing in the morning. Those boats leave between 8 and 9 in the morning. The wharf is across the street from the hotel. I don't see why someone would espouse the fact that the hotel is in a 'crime area' where they aren't really going to be exposed to any danger whatsoever.
