Chacchoben Ruins, The Real Thing?

I have read that some of the tourist sites in Costa Maya have been built to give cruise ship tourists an overview of Mayan culture, and are replicas of some of the ancient monuments. Is that true? We were thinking of visiting the Chacchoben Ruins and the Chacchoben village, but want to know if they are true historic sites. Also, my 78 year old husband is only capable of walking a few hundred yards and wondered if this excursion would be worthwhile for him.
