Cell Phone Service
We use Alltel and are wondering how cell service is in St. John? I am trying to figure out if there will be roaming and/or long distance charges if we are able to use phone. Any insight?

I have no clue regarding Alltel. We have Verizon and Sprint and both work on the western half (Cruz Bay) side of the island. We also got a local Cingular account and that works best in the Virgin Islands. You should just give your carrier a call. We are charged roaming on our Verizon and Sprint.

Tuxedocat - how hard do you think it would be to get a pay as you go cell phone from Cingular to cover the time we're on STJ (2 weeks)? I'm not expecting my Verizon phone from home to work in Coral Bay...but would like to have a number where I can be reached if necessary (the peril of being a business owner on vacation).

Trish: It's costly to get a phone there as I had to buy one from the Cingular agent (located in Starfish Market complex third floor). They don't rent (hmmh...there's a business for me to get into...Don't tell anyone!)and the cheapest is about $125. I figure I need one down there so I went ahead and bought it. Also, it can be used anywhere with a pay as you go phone later. You might check with your rental agent. There may be a house phone at your villa. Many places have house phones.
