Hi, Cayman Sue and the other Cayman aficionados!
Awhile back, I had found a website that included ratings and descriptions of the snorkeling for all lodgings.
Anyone know what that site is? Of if it still exists.... I am thinking of Cayman Kai, but am not sure which part of it offers the best snorkeling right off the beach.

I can confirm that Cayman Kai has some of the best off the beach snorkeling on GC. Be aware there is sometimes a moderate undertow and therefore we wear inflatable vests and do NOT go on top of the reef.

Thanks, Stan. Another query...I keep reading about mosquitos being a real problem, and noticed that most porches are screened. Is this a problem during the day or just at night (when I would expect it more)?

Almost all the islands have some mosquito problem after 3-4 PM or after a rain or on a high humidity day with clouds. Grand Cayman was was not one of the more problematic ones, though. I always put spray on with at least 30% DEET on and at night or after a rain I use 50%-70% DEET. Many people believe it is harmful but an immunologist we use for shots for Asia and Africa told us we can use Ben's 100% DEET for 2 weeks 2 or 3 times a day without a problem except around cuts, healing scratches or new sunburn. When we return home he advises 2 showers a day with hard soap for a few days and wash everything we wore withthe spray twice.

You should also check out the Reef Resort on the east end of Grand Cayman. Excellent snorkeling right off of the beach. Also, regarding your second question about mosquitos... we have only seen them after dark.

Another question...if Cayman Kai, what is best? Oceanfront, soundfront or lagoon? Snorkeling looks very shallow in pix..is it?

I'm topping this post because I'm going next month and staying near Rum Pointe..so I'd like to know about the snorkelingas well!

Also Stan mentioned about the life vests...can you rent vests or noodles near Rum Pointe?

I prefer the snorkeling by the Reef Resort on the east end over the Cayman Kai area. (not as shallow and no undertow if you stay within the reef between Moritts and the Reef Resort) Make sure and take a 2 or 3 stop snorkel trip to Stingray City, several leave from Rum Point. The Coral Gardens and Reef are great, in addition to Stingray City, which isn't exactly snorkeling, but great fun and adventure anyway. We also like the Cemetary Reef on 7MB.

We have our own snorkel vests (although we rarely use them) so I'm not sure where you can rent them at. If you can't get them at Cayman Kai, try the Ocean Frontiers dive shop on the east end. They may have them in their shop at the Reef Resort too.
