I always heard that no one really knew, but some people believe it came from a a dry cure method of preserving foods used by people who had escaped slavery in Jamaica. Other people insisted it was called "jerk" because the meat is jerked from one side to the other as it cooks over hot coals. Did you hear something different?

I'd bet there are at least a dozen different alleged origins for jerk chicken, but it's all the same to me when I'm eating it!

Jacketwatch,
I like your story the best! Jerk chicken sounds good right now, doesn't it? It's so hot here, I might as well be in Jamaica.

Knowing: Thank you. Where are you? It hit around 98 here in the Chicago area and may be 100 by tomorrow. I think Jamaica is a bit cooler. Larry

It is cooler actually
At least in Mobay. It's been rainy and overcast. We need the rain desperately so I'm grateful.

Re jacketwatch's history lesson on "jerk"...uuhhmmm yeah...o.k....

That's all I have to say.

jacketwatch,
I definitely don't need a doctor. I think I've had enough of them to last me a lifetime!

I've never heard that explanation of jerk before.

Hi Larry,
I'm North of you in MN. Our temps have been in the 100's. I really do like the warm weather, but there is a limit!
MoBay was the first place I ever visited in the Caribbean, so Jerk was the first Caribbean food I ever tried - and fell in love with. When I visited Nevis last year, as soon as we arrived we went to grab something to eat and I decided to take the opportunity to ask the waitress without seeing the menu yet if they could make me jerk chicken. It was SO good.

Thanks Knowing. I saw something on the news yesterday about the extreme temps up your way which is of course very unusual for that area. Things are supposed to cool off a bit by tomorrow. I am off today and yesterday but it was too hot to get out and play golf which I love to do. I eschew riding. Stay cool. Larry
