OK Christie I have one for everyone. Why is it called Jerk chicken? At least according to a Ja. cook I once met. :S-

Knowing Jul 30th, 2006 11:23 AM

I always heard that no one really knew, but some people believe it came from a a dry cure method of preserving foods used by people who had escaped slavery in Jamaica. Other people insisted it was called "jerk" because the meat is jerked from one side to the other as it cooks over hot coals. Did you hear something different?

Jacketwatch,

I have no clue..is Knowing right?

:D Well thats not the story I heard. :S-The cook said in the chicken was dumb enough to get caught he was a JERK. Yah mon. :D :D Knowing is probably right. :D

ejcrowe Jul 30th, 2006 03:26 PM

I'd bet there are at least a dozen different alleged origins for jerk chicken, but it's all the same to me when I'm eating it!

jacketwatch Jul 30th, 2006 03:41 PM

Yes. H O T !! :D

Knowing Jul 31st, 2006 02:48 PM

Jacketwatch,
I like your story the best! Jerk chicken sounds good right now, doesn't it? It's so hot here, I might as well be in Jamaica.

jacketwatch Jul 31st, 2006 04:17 PM

Knowing: Thank you. :D Where are you? It hit around 98 here in the Chicago area and may be 100 by tomorrow. I think Jamaica is a bit cooler. :-) Larry

JAGIRL Jul 31st, 2006 04:23 PM

It is cooler actually :)
At least in Mobay. It's been rainy and overcast. We need the rain desperately so I'm grateful.

Re jacketwatch's history lesson on "jerk"...uuhhmmm yeah...o.k....:D :))

That's all I have to say.

jacketwatch Jul 31st, 2006 04:33 PM

Thats it?? JAGIRL do you need a doctor mon? :D :D

JAGIRL Aug 1st, 2006 05:36 AM

jacketwatch,
I definitely don't need a doctor. I think I've had enough of them to last me a lifetime! :D

I've never heard that explanation of jerk before.

jacketwatch Aug 1st, 2006 07:55 AM

JAGIRL: Glad evry ting be Irie. :-)

Knowing Aug 1st, 2006 10:34 AM

Hi Larry,
I'm North of you in MN. Our temps have been in the 100's. I really do like the warm weather, but there is a limit!
MoBay was the first place I ever visited in the Caribbean, so Jerk was the first Caribbean food I ever tried - and fell in love with. When I visited Nevis last year, as soon as we arrived we went to grab something to eat and I decided to take the opportunity to ask the waitress without seeing the menu yet if they could make me jerk chicken. It was SO good.

jacketwatch Aug 1st, 2006 10:57 AM

Thanks Knowing. I saw something on the news yesterday about the extreme temps up your way which is of course very unusual for that area. Things are supposed to cool off a bit by tomorrow. I am off today and yesterday but it was too hot to get out and play golf which I love to do. I eschew riding. Stay cool. :-) Larry

JAGIRL Aug 1st, 2006 04:16 PM

Jacketwatch,
I see you're practicing your island speak. ;)

Head on over to the trivia thread why don't y'all. Try your hand at my question.

jacketwatch Aug 1st, 2006 05:21 PM
