Caribbean lit recs?

I've become quite interested in reading Caribbean literature and would love some recommendations. I love fiction and have done quite a bit of Jamaica Kincaid and Edwidge Danticat. I don't read much poetry but I have enjoyed some of Derek Walcott's essays. I also liked Wouk's Don't Stop the Carnival. I don't have a lot of criteria, other than good writing. The author can be from the Caribbean or just write about the Caribbean. Fiction or non-fiction, as long as it's engaging. Thanks!

I highly recommed checking out The Caribbean Writer website. http://www.thecaribbeanwriter.com/
Tons and tons of short fiction, poetry, plays, essays all with a Caribbean focus and by Caribbean authors. It's published by the University of the Virgin Islands but the works come from all over the Caribbean, from Cuba to Aruba. Enjoy!

23-25 May, Treasure Beach, South Coast of Jamaica, that is, for the Calabash Literary Festival, a big event, now in its third year, with about 750-1,000 people attending. Justine Henzell, sister of Jason who runs Jake's and daughter of Sally and Perry ('The Harder They Come') is founder and producer.

Wow, I wish I'd known about the literary festival earlier. Maybe I can plan for next year. Is it usually around the same time each year? How far in advance do you have to register for it? Russell Banks is one of my favorite writers.

Calabash Lit Fest is annual (this the third) in May. Accomodations go very fast, as Treasure Beach is villas, guesthouses, no resorts,no AIs and just two small hotels. Justine Henzell, the founder/producer, posts news on their site around March. If Russ Banks if a fav, see Horizon and Drambuie at jamaicaescapes.com where location shots of the combined 'Book of Jamaica' and 'Rule of the Bone' will be done (his former wife owns Horizon). H.Peck, the director of 'Lumumba' is also now doing the screenplay for 'Continental Drift'.

Great thread ej! For some reason there are tons of questions like this in teh Europe board, but not enough on the Caribbean board.

I absolutely LOVED "The Kingdom of this World" by Alejo Carpentier.
