Cap Juluca Questions,Questions,Questions
We are going to Anguilla this November for the first time and are staying at Cap Juluca - theres a package deal that includes 4 dinners at their restaurants. I know the Island has a lot to offer restaurant wise can anyone offer some information about their favorite restaurants there. Also, how is the weather in Mid November??? Thanks

Here's another vote for Straw Hat. We found the "straw hat theme" to be a tad tacky, but it was the only place we found on Anguilla that deserved a second visit. One pleasant surprise - the food and beaches on Anguilla are several cuts above anything you will find in the US Virgin Islands! Once we found Anguilla, there was no looking back!

Been to Anguilla 2 times. Best restaurants on the island in my opinion are:<BR><BR>1) Altamer (absolutely the best!)the most 'chi chi' restaurant on Anguilla<BR>2) Straw Hat (opposite ambiance of Altamer-it is on a ledge overlooking the water, totally friendly owners, excellent food, the best, the hubby's favorite<BR>3)Cuisinart Santorini restaurant is reallygood, so is Blanchards but I thought the folks at Mangos were totally rude....The owner went and said 'hi to everyone in the restaurant (maybe 8 couples) and skipped over us b/c we are in our 20's....pretty sad, you dont know who people are just by looking at them, anyway, we wont go back there....

Also one on that level is 'cocco plums' which was REALLY good for the money...<BR><BR>have fun!

November is the last month of the hurricane season and weather can be unpredictable. But the last two years no big storms has hit Anguilla, so fingers crossed you will be ok.<BR><BR>Will add my favourites to the restaurant list (in no particular order:<BR><BR>Hibernia (My no. 1, worth the long drive from West End)<BR><BR>Oliver's (coconut pie is a "must")<BR><BR>Cocoplums (great lunches, havn't had dinners but heard good reports)<BR><BR>Ferryboat Inn (great steaks and best burgers on the island, and don't miss Majories Tea Punch). Prices mid-range.<BR><BR>Roy's (best English Fish and Chips, great crayfish, lobster soup, french onion soup). This is also the place to find Calvin if you want to hire him to take you to Little Bay where the snorkelling is amazing. Prices mid-range.<BR><BR>Ripples (casual, Bistro style, lively bar). Reasonable prices.<BR><BR>E's Oven (casual, great food at reasonable prices.<BR><BR>Pimm's!

My wife and I just returned from CJ last Saturday and it was fabulous! Sounds like we had the same package as you, with the four meals on site, rental car, couples massage and snorkeling trip. We were happy we got that package and enjoyed every part of it. Restaurants on CJ are very good. We ate dinner twice at Pimms and had lunch and dinner at Georges. Georges also caters the beach bar-b-ques and they are wonderful. We dined out at Olivers and Mangoes and enjoyed them both. Expect to spend about $100 for two for dinner at any of the better restaurants. Both these places are short cab rides from CJ. We also had lunch on Scilly Cay which is only accessable by boat. Food was outstanding. Use your car rental to go to Shoal Bay-East to swim and snorkel. It's the most beautiful beach I've ever seen; just like a post card. I suggest you go early in the morning, although it was not crowded at all. I know you will love Anguilla. There is not much else to see other than the beaches and the resorts, but we did not mind that at all. And if you want a different selection of tee shirts, the only place that has any is the main drug store in The Valley. You'll pass it enroute to Shoal Bay-East. We can't wait to return!

Just returned from Cap juluca on Sunday. This resort is simply paradise. Service was unbelievable...cold towels and ice cold Evian during the day....sorbet at 4:00 brought to you on the beach....great beach bar service, etc. etc. etc.<BR><BR>Pimms at Cap was the best restaurant in my book! Wow...what a setting. Get there by 7 to ensure a table right on the water. The waves splash up a few feet from your tables edge. Great food and atmosphere.<BR><BR>I agree with the earlier post about using the car to go to Shoal Bay....we did and it was magnificent. One day away from Cap was enough for me...I didn't want to part again. One suggestion is to eat at Straw Hat the night you have the car, as it is a it further than the airport and would probably be over $20 each way by cab.<BR><BR>Other restaurants we visited were Blanchards (just ok in my book, but people to rave about it) and Olivers, which we also enjoyed very much. Olivers is waterfront, Blanchards is not.<BR><BR>Cap is truly a unique place, and I will look forward to returning again. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Just returned from Cap Juluca on Saturday. My husband and I have decided we don't want to vacation anywhere else ever again. Anguilla is THAT GREAT.<BR><BR>I agree and disagree with previous posters. I was EXTREMELY disappointed with the food at Cap Juluca. I must preface this by stating that I am from Washington DC which has some top notch restaurants. The food at Pimms is okay - I guess I was expecting more because of the level of service throughout the rest of the hotel. <BR><BR>I did not eat at George's except for the West Indian Buffet Night and the Beach Bar-b-Q. Both were a total waste of money. The Beach Bar-b was terrible. There is a huge selection, but the only thing worth eating was the steamed shrimp and the grilled crayfish. This dinner turned out to be the most expensive meal we had and was the worst. It was close to $250 for 2 with a bottle of water and 2 beers each. Plus the waiters are horrible - you practically have to beg them to remove your buffet plate and to replenish your drinks.<BR><BR>Kemia's is okay if you're not hungry - it an appetizer place. The apps we had were very good though but the portions were very small. I was extremely disappointed in the sushi which I had been craving all day. I think the piece of sashima was about the size of my fingernail (vs. the 2-3" portion of fish you would get in the US or anywhere else).<BR><BR>Funny thing about the restaurants at Cap. . .they give you free bottled water all day on the beach, then charge you at the restaurants for it! <BR><BR>Basically, we are already planning to return to Cap next year, but have vowed not to eat at the resort. Maybe things are better in high season than in June?<BR><BR>Off resort restaurants were good though:<BR><BR>You HAVE to eat at Scilly Cay. They are only open for lunch and serve grilled lobster, crayfish and chicken. The lobster is $50; the crayfish/chicken combo $40; and I think the chicken might have been $30. We got the 1st too. If you are staying at Cap, you can charge your food back to the room even though this restaurant is on the other side of the island. The owners (Eudoxie and Sandra) are very nice people. We actually ran into them at Altamer for dinner while they were celebrating a family bday and sent us each a slice of their birthday cake!<BR><BR>Altamer is EXCELLENT. Someone said it was very expensive - we didn't find it any more expensive than Pimms or Mangos. The ambiance is much nicer than Pimms too because there is a piano player rather than a CD player playing the same Sade CD over and over!<BR><BR>Mangos is good, but I second the comment that the owner is RUDE. We heard this from several people and experienced it ourselves as well. I had the paella (excellent) and my husband had the steak (also very good)We almost boycotted the place because of what we had heard about the owner. . .<BR><BR>Weather - take lots of sunscreen. I tan easily and burned the first day with SPF 15 on. We wore 30 the remainder of the trip and I'm still quite tan. I would probaby take something stronger than 30 next time.. .<BR>There is a nice breeze all the time, so you don't realize that the sun is so strong.<BR><BR>In a nutshell - Anguilla is heaven on earth. The people are wonderful. The island is safe. The beaches are beautiful. Enjoy your trip!<BR><BR>If you stay at the end of the resort - at the pool villas, Carol will take care of you on the beach. He provides top notch service!<BR>

Thanks for an honest report. Without a few reports like this, Cap Jaluca was on a fast track to being over rated. We visited Anguilla once and probably won't return because we're hooked on great diving and snorkeling right off the beach, something we did not find in Anguilla. For us Anguilla's 2 strongest points were the fine swimming beaches and good chioce of quality restaurants. We're probably in the minority opinion, becasue although Cap looked very nice, we had absolutely no desire to stay there since resorts are not our thing. Give us a private beachfront cottage on a very tropical island with great marine life at our doorstep, not a string of units marching side by side down a groomed beach.

Carl, I do not think anyone can give a valid opinion based on just looking at a hotel. If its not for you fine, but the rooms and service are wonderful. Its not your thing! It is a stunning hotel, and to experience the quality and comfort is to stay there! I love the groomed beach and also go next door to natural Cove Bay! I enjoy this hotel, but find Pimms to be sporadic, so we have lots of excellent dining choices! Is CJ overated, not really!<BR>I always look forward to returning to Anguilla, as the island is more than a hotel! <BR>

I have to agree with Carl, here's a pic of Maunday's Bay with the string of units. We prefer lush islnads with beaches that have backdrops of trees and mountains.<BR><BR>http://www.skypic.com/carib/3-7814.jpg

Sorry, didn't mean to rile anyone up. I was just giving my honest opinion. I liked Anguilla better than 2 out of 3 of the islands I have visited, which is 14 as of last count. But I don't see Cap as representative of Anguilla, there is just so much more to Anguilla than Cap. I didn't need to stay there to know if it was right for me. There is no arguing that many people love it, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. Especially for a diver like me.

Here's another picture showing the units marching down the beach arm-in-arm w/umbrellas set up in military fashion all in a row. OUCH, what an eye sore!<BR><BR>http://www.capjaluca.com/daytimepanorama.asp
